Job Description

Care is needed for an 86 year old female as a live in carer. She had a stroke in Jan 2016 and is unable to walk or stand. She receives home help during weekdays for approximately 5 to 7 hours a day (depending on the day) where a carer comes in and takes care of her. We are looking for someone to provide additional care outside the times she has a carer with her which is approximately 30 or 35 hours a week. She does not speak much and needs help with all aspects of living including eating & drinking, washing, toileting etc. The role is for evening hours and weekends. The role of the live in carer is to attend to all aspects of her care during the hours you are on duty, e.g. assisting with eating, get up and back into bed, toileting, washing, dressing and generally help with all aspects everyday living. Also to keep the area clean and tidy. She likes to sleep as much as she allowed to so we would want the carer to encourage her to get up and engage with her during the day and try to stimulate her though chatting, possibly reading to her, going for short walks etc. As mentioned above, she doesn't say much but communicates (mostly) by answering questions with by shaking or nodding her head. We are looking for someone who is willing to work on their own initiative but yet who knows when to look for assistance if and when necessary. We need someone with a positive 'can do' attitude who is happy to work alone (once comfortable) and also with the family as required. A happy disposition and a willingness to learn is more important than lots of experience as we feel that every situation is different so this role will have its own learning curve. Training will be given. A sense of humour is also needed :) Three dogs and cat live in the house and so the carer will need to be comfortable with animals. We also have chickens. This means fresh eggs are available and in the summer time, there are home grown organic vegetables too. Also to take into account is that area is rural, very scenic and peaceful and quiet (remote). 3.5 miles/ 5km from the nearest town and 15 miles/20 km from Cork city (approx 30 min drive). The nearest bus stop is approximately 3km away. We are happy to bring a carer to and from the bus if needed and if the times suit, they are always welcome to get a lift to Cork if we are leaving at a suitable time. We require that the carer has a valid visa and it legally allowed to work in Ireland.
