Introduction
I am the oldest of five children, all of us raised in Australia through homeschooling. My mother, while not a teacher, chose homeschooling due to her dissatisfaction with the structure of public schools and her desire to impart more life skills. I was homeschooled from the age of six until I turned 15. I actively participated in raising and homeschooling my younger siblings, which later led me to take on babysitting roles for friends and family.
I started working at the age of 14 in a cafe and continued working in the hospitality field until I turned 17 when I took on my first role in disability care. I worked as a therapeutic care worker for people with varying disabilities in a respite center. This role taught me patience and compassion in communication, helping individuals recognize their strengths while understanding their limitations, and creating a safe and supportive space.
My time in this role was brief because I had plans to travel around Australia. Leaving that job was one of the hardest decisions, even though it was intended to be short-term. Afterward, I worked as an au pair for an Australian family in Sydney, who were also business coaches. The job opportunity came up last minute, and within three days, I met the family and left for America with them. The family had three children, one with cerebral palsy and epilepsy, another with autism and OCD, and the third with ADHD – quite a handful.
We homeschooled on the road, traveling state to state while caring for the children with disabilities. I was 19 at the time, and it taught me about time management, compassion, and how to create stability and a safe environment even when constantly changing locations. This was a short-term role as they needed an au pair for their trip to America. In Australia, they already had a nanny, but it was an incredible experience that made me realize my passion for this line of work.
For the past couple of years, I've been working as a therapeutic care worker in the foster care system in Australia. I've been caring for kids in state housing who have faced difficulties finding a stable family. The role has been both challenging and rewarding, working with children with complex issues who have been in and out of juvenile detention. These children are some of the most remarkable I've ever met, displaying incredible compassion, understanding, and resilience.
In the foster care role, I switch between houses, caring for different children, which can be demanding. I also split my time between Kenya, where I've been working with the Maasai community. I established my own Community-Based Organization (CBO) to provide education and community support for Maasai communities around Kajiado.
Now, as I've returned to Kenya with a commitment to stay for the next year, I'd like to continue working with children. Besides that, I'm a sports massage therapist and work in a gym in Nairobi.
This is a brief overview of my work and who I am. On a personal note, I have a deep passion for working with children. I've learned so much about communication, connection, and the curiosity children have about the world. If you have the time, I'd love to sit down for a cup of tea and get to know each other better. Face-to-face interactions reveal so much more about a person. I'm grateful that you've taken the time to read my bio, and I hope you have a wonderful day.
