Hello, I am Raúl and I am eighteen years old. I currently live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. My mom is Portuguese and my dad is Dutch, so I am a mix. I also got a younger brother (14) and we get along really well. We cook, play basketball and game together.
After six years of secondary school, I really want a break before continuing my studies. That is why I am doing a gap year (2023-2024) so I can travel and make friends from different countries. Making strong connections is a must for me. Also living near the beach or at least driving distance from the beach is important for me (I have got a driving license), because one of my biggest hobbies is surfing.
I work in the kitchen of a restaurant in Amsterdam. As you might know, the kitchen can be quite hectic. So I can cope really well with stress. In addition the other chefs in the kitchen also need to trust you with for example completing the dishes on time. Last I was invited also to come to another restaurant of the same chain, showing that I am reliable and trustworthy.
But now the real stuff: why do I want to become an au pair?
First of all, I like to teach and help children. During my internship to become a surf instructor, I mostly worked with younger kids. I found that the lessons with these young and energetic kids are by far the most fun. They are willing to learn and although they often wonder off in their heads, they keep others lively.
Besides this, I also get an enormous amount of joy when I am teaching or interacting with kids. For example on the soccer field or with homework.
I am looking forward to be a part of someone's family next year!
