Introduction
I grew up to a Cuban father and an American mother. I have a younger sister, who I'm very close with. We used to roller skate and bike all across our neighborhood together. My dad taught me how to cook some Cuban dishes, but I could never make flan better than my abuela. I'm originally from Dallas, Texas, but spent my summers visiting my family in Miami, Florida and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I also lived in Los Angeles, California for four years to attend university. I also have a partner, who I've been with almost a year (we are about to celebrate our one year anniversary); we met in Taiwan while I was teaching there. He's from Nice and is the reason I'm choosing to work in this region of France!
I like to live every day to the fullest. I think it's so important to experience all that life has to offer: family, community, love, nature, travel, work, food, and everything else in between. I always try to incorporate adventure in my life, and hobbies that feed my soul. Currently, I am learning to sew (and learning French of course!), and I want to start taking Karate or salsa lessons with my partner. I have traveled quite a lot; I moved for my education twice, and for work once as well, leaving behind everything and everyone I knew. I like to challenge and push myself to do difficult things or that scare me, because I know they will help me grow.
I graduated from university over a year ago with a bachelor's degree in both Journalism and Philosophy, Politics, and Law. I went to the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, a very well-renowned school in the US. During my education, I worked for a law firm as a specialist, as a teacher's assistant and tutor, I worked in office administration and customer service. After I graduated, I worked as a reporter and editor at a political magazine in the US, then I went to work as an English teacher in Taiwan.
I have worked with kids a lot. In college, I worked as a reading and writing tutor for a program that helped prepare underprivileged kids for kindergarten, most of whom didn't have proper access to education. Afterwards, I worked for an online tutoring platform teaching teens English in individual sessions catered to their specific needs. I also worked as an assistant English teacher for international teens and young adults who needed to improve their English level to complete their degree. After college, I worked as an English teacher in Taiwan, teaching kids 2 through 12 years of age English, reading comprehension, and some science.
My native language is English, but I grew up understanding and sometimes speaking Spanish with my family. I was able to master the Spanish language by studying it in high school and college. I even spent a semester abroad in Madrid, Spain for 6 months. I took classes in both Spanish and English. I'm between a B2 and C1 level. I am also currently studying French. I started learning when I met my partner, as he's French. He started teaching me, and I also now have a podcast and workbook I am using to progress. I'm at about an A2 level right now.
I first decided to become an au pair because I would like to move to France, and this job opportunity aligns perfectly with both my personal and work experience. As I have visited Nice (where my partner lives) and the surrounding region, I have developed a love for French culture; the food and language, the way community and connection are prioritized, and the slower pace of life. Additionally, I really enjoy working with kids. I really think kids have a lot to teach adults, especially in regards to respecting and trusting your emotions and wants, and living in the moment.
