To understand why I want to be a caregiver, it helps to know a little about my story. I was fortunate to grow up surrounded by my grandparents and great-grandfather, who helped shape my values and taught me the importance of kindness, respect, and compassion. At a young age, I helped care for my grandfather after he developed diabetes and suffered two strokes. I assisted with his medications, prepared meals, helped around the house, and supported him with his daily needs. Being able to help someone I loved brought me a great sense of joy and purpose.
After my grandfather passed away, my family and I moved to the United States, and I eventually settled in Florida. I attended trade school and earned my certification as a Medical Administrative Assistant. Although I initially pursued opportunities in that field, I was given the chance to work as a caregiver for a gentleman in Orlando who was bedridden after multiple strokes. Caring for him felt very familiar, as it reminded me of the time I spent helping my grandfather. My responsibilities included assisting with medications reminders, meal preparation, errands, housekeeping, and companionship.
What I enjoyed most was spending time with him—listening to his stories, having conversations, and helping him stay engaged. Through that experience, I realized that caregiving is more than helping with daily tasks. It's about providing comfort, dignity, companionship, and hope. There is nothing more rewarding to me than making someone feel cared for, valued, and supported during a difficult time. Being able to brighten someone's day, even in a small way, is what makes caregiving so meaningful to me.
