Hello!!

My name is Emilie and I will be moving to Barcelona with my husband, Dio, and our two furry kids (one dog and one cat!) on September 28th and we couldn’t be more ready!
To keep our story short and sweet, we went on a beautiful vacation to Barcelona a year ago (literally the same time we are moving!!) and we fell in love with the culture, beauty and lifestyle. My father is from the Netherlands and my mom Is from France. We spent every summer from when I was three years old up until I was 15 between Rotterdam and Mougins (a small village in the south of France) visiting family! To say Europe always had a special place in my heart is an understatement. Dio is from the Dominican Republic with his family roots from Spain! We see ourselves building a family (god willing) in Spain and we wouldn’t be more excited and blessed. Dio will be studying to get his Masters in Finance at EAE Business School!

I currently work as a caretaker/companion here in NYC for an 86 year old angel, Stuart. I have been with him for about a year now and his dementia has slowly been getting worse the last few months. However our bond has grown that much stronger. I never thought how fulfilling this job would be and how much it would mean to me. I never had a grandfather so Stuart has become that figure for me and has taught me so much. One of the most beautiful things is learning to slow down and just be; something I notice in the lifestyle of Barcelona and crave for. It’s very hard to do that here in America, specifically in NYC. I once took Stuart to Central Park to sit on a bench in the sunshine and forgot his newspaper! I was so upset and immediately thought I hope he won’t be bored! Boy, did he teach me a thing or two! He just sat in his wheelchair, people watching and staring up at the sun as he closed his eyes and sun-baked in the beauty. I put my phone down and did the same thing and couldn’t believe how peaceful it felt.
I will miss Stuart tremendously and I know this could be last days with him. He may or may not remember me but I can only imagine our memories will last somewhere. I would love to continue to work with the elderly in Barcelona and find myself another Stuart and learn and laugh with someone new. Stuart truly became family to me and will always hold a special place in my heart.

I unfortunately don’t speak Spanish fluently (not yet ,but I plan on taking Spanish lessons; alongside the Spanish classes my husband gives me). Nonetheless, I would be more than willing to work with Spanish-only families!
Sometimes smiles and laughs is gold itself; just how my mom and my Dutch grandma were with one another!
I offer a carefree, fun, energetic, atmosphere filled with walks, talks and games (if they enjoy that of course!) I am very easy going and can easily accustom to their needs/activities. I am an extremely active individual and would make sure Stuart would get to his PT classes, go on walks in the building with his walker and push him around the city in his wheelchair! I believe moving the body is very important for all ages as it also exercises the mind and soul!
