Introduction
I actively participate in continuous professional development (CPD), with structured goals for each period. My CPD activities include tutorials, seminars, training programs, and workshops. I have led tutorial sessions on complex and early discharge planning for elderly and frail patients, stroke and dementia management, community elderly support, the role of local healthcare authorities in discharge planning, care package design, and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). I also contributed to fall-risk prevention programs and am currently enrolled in a CPD program focused on managing lumbosacral spondylolisthesis and Parkinson’s disease in relation to falls among geriatric patients. Our department conducts weekly clinical seminars and in-service trainings, where I actively participate—especially in sessions on clinical manual handling and hands-on therapy skills. Additionally, I have studied Understanding Dementia and the Role of Healthcare Professionals.
During my 24-month post-graduation rotational placements, I worked across core physiotherapy specialties including cardiopulmonary, critical care, orthopaedics/musculoskeletal, community-based rehabilitation, geriatrics, neurology, and paediatrics. I treated a wide range of neurological conditions affecting children, young adults, and elderly patients. These included cerebrovascular accidents, Alzheimer’s dementia, Parkinson’s disease, myalgic encephalitis, ALS, traumatic brain injuries, diabetic complications, dyslexia, autism, Bell’s palsy, rotator cuff injuries, amputations, piriformis and carpal tunnel syndromes, various radiculopathies, cerebral palsy, Erb’s palsy, Osgood-Schlatter disease, acute flaccid paralysis, cerebral meningitis, and post-malaria complications such as hemiparesis. I utilised gait re-education modules, assistive devices (crutches, frames, CP chairs), and mobility exercises including PNF, stretching, hold-relax techniques, bed mobility, and more.
I served for 36 months as a senior physiotherapist in the musculoskeletal and orthopaedic unit, managing conditions such as fractures, hip and knee osteoarthritis, lumbar spondylosis, Achilles tendonitis, rheumatoid arthritis, contractures, talipes equinovarus, and osteomyelitis. I applied clinical targets and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) including SNAP tools, Goniometry, DASH, LEFS, VAS, MMT, NDI, Barthel Index, and frailty, cognitive, balance, and falls assessments.
In the critical care unit, where I worked for 24 months, I treated patients with acute conditions such as empyema thoracis, emphysema, COPD, tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, bronchitis, atelectasis, post-surgical complications, and heart failure. My therapeutic goals were to clear lung secretions, enhance lung expansion, train endurance, improve oxygenation and function, educate patients and caregivers, support junior staff, and escalate complications promptly. I employed techniques like postural drainage, autogenic drainage, percussion, aerobic therapy, ACBT, and tools such as incentive spirometers and manual hyperventilation.
During my 18-month assignment at a mental health institute, I collaborated with psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers to manage mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders. We developed care plans, organised peer support groups, and designed hospice care frameworks. I showed empathy and discretion, documented observations, and supported patient engagement in activities of daily living. I used standard treatment guidelines, CBT formulations, SPECAL methods, and followed safeguarding and positive care principles for patients with cognitive or learning difficulties.
Community rehabilitation is another area of strength. I have led health promotion initiatives that educate on the role of physical activity in preventing hypokinetic conditions and reducing hospital admissions, in alignment with the "Home First" approach. I organised fall-prevention campaigns, created self-care plans, and screened elderly populations for risk factors. My responsibilities included training proper transfers, conducting fall assessments, and guiding assistive device use. I also completed a certification in “Caregiving Skills”.
