Introduction
The family I work for now is in France. I take care of an 7 year-old (he was 5 when I arrived). It's just him and his mom so I feel I have more responsibilities than I did in Milan. Everyday I pick up the kid from school for lunch, and then his mom (usually) takes him back after lunch. At the end of the school day, I get him again and then he's with me until his mom gets home from work. Some days I take him to his extracurriculars, other days we go to the pool/beach/for a walk if the weather permits. Everyday, I do his homework with him and I try to read with him. When I first arrived in France, I knew no French so my first few months required a lot of learning and flexibility from me and him. I have to learn how to communicate with him and accept when he was too frustrated to even try to understand my French attempts or simple English phrases. Now, I can speak more French and he can understand so much English so we're a strong team. I spend every day during the week with him so I've learned how to adapt to his moods and keep him entertained.
I can be described at motivated and loyal. People who know me know that I will make sure to follow through on commitments and won't do that task half-way. I'm constantly checking in with people to make sure they're doing good. I do occasionally try to correct people too often when I notice them doing something incorrectly, but I try my best to allow them the opportunity to learn themselves (if the environment allows).
I am patient and understanding with children. I do my best to explain concepts and have us work through emotions, treating them as an equal and not acting as though they need everything to be broken down for them. I once got randomly stopped by a speech pathologist when I was walking through a store while babysitting, and the woman commended me for how I was speaking to the child.
In my eyes, the nanny's role in the family is to help the children grow into their best selves. You're not just a background character in their childhood, you play an important part and the kids will potentially look back fondly on your time with them.
