Some of my most meaningful experiences of care and responsibility come right from my own home. Being the older sibling, I have shared a very special bond with my brother and sister ever since they were small, and as we grew up, I naturally took on more and more responsibility for guiding and supporting them. When our parents were busy working to provide for our family, I was the one who stepped in to make sure they were always okay: waking them up gently in the morning, helping them get dressed and ready for school, packing their meals and school supplies properly, and making sure they left home feeling loved and prepared for their day. When classes ended, I would be there waiting for them, helping them review their lessons, explaining parts they found hard, checking their assignments, and encouraging them to do their best while reminding them it is alright to make mistakes as long as we learn from them. We would also spend our afternoons playing games, drawing, singing, telling stories, or helping out together around the house. Even now that they are older, I still guide them in making good choices, listen when they have worries they feel shy talking about with anyone else, and cheer loudest for every little success they achieve. This taught me how to be both an understanding companion and a steady guide, to adjust my way of communicating depending on their age and mood, and to always keep an eye out even when things seem calm.

Aside from my siblings, for several years now I have also shared the care of our grandmother, who lives with us. She has been such an important part of our lives, and being able to give back the love she poured into all of us is something I hold very dear. I help her with her daily needs: assisting her moving around the house, preparing soft and nourishing food that suits her diet, making sure she takes her medicine at exactly the right times, keeping her space clean, fresh and comfortable, and sitting with her for long talks about her life, our family history, and the wisdom she wants us to keep. I learned to notice small changes—if she seems tired, quiet, or uncomfortable—and attend to her needs right away, to speak gently and listen with all my attention, and to always treat our elders with the highest respect and patience no matter what. Looking after both younger loved ones and someone in their older years showed me that care looks different for everyone, but the heart behind it stays the same: giving your time, your attention, and your whole self to make their days brighter and easier.

Outside our home, I have also looked after my younger cousins, nieces, and nephews—from keeping them safe and happy while their parents were away, organizing fun and simple learning activities, to comforting them when they were upset or not feeling well. Through all of this, I truly learned that every child and every person has their own personality, interests, and way of expressing themselves: some are full of energy and love exploring, while others are quieter and enjoy stories or quiet time together. I always take time to know who they really are so I can support them in the way that fits them best.
