Introduction

Dear Host Family,

My name is Islamiyyah, and I'm a 24-year-old from Lagos, Nigeria and I'm so excited to be doing this!

Thank you for taking the time to visit my profile.

If there's one thing that has always been part of my life, it's caring for children.

It has never felt like something I had to do but it has simply come naturally to me.

Some of my earliest experiences were within my own family.

When I was 15 years old, my mother experienced postpartum depression after giving birth to my younger sister.

She was only five months old, and during that period I became one of her main caregivers.

Looking back, I probably didn't realize how much responsibility I was carrying at the time but I simply knew my little sister needed someone to love, care for, and be there for her every day.

That experience taught me patience, responsibility, and the quiet kind of love that children need to feel safe.

Over the years, caring for children became a constant part of my life.

From helping my maternal aunt care for her children when she was pregnant through their early years, and also supporting my stepsister during her postpartum period by helping care for her newborn.

Beyond family, I also worked in a daycare and later became an elementary school teacher, where I spent my days caring for and teaching children of different personalities and age groups.

One of my most treasured memories was my last day as a teacher.

I expected to quietly say goodbye, but instead the children hugged me, cried, gave me little gifts, and handed me beautifully decorated cards they had made themselves.

It was such an emotional moment because it reminded me that children always remember how you make them feel.

Knowing that I had become someone they loved and trusted is something I will always carry with me.

I'm naturally cheerful, friendly, and easy to talk to and my friends would describe me as lively, kind, caring, and someone who easily brings warmth into a room.

Children usually become comfortable around me quite quickly because I genuinely enjoy listening to them.

I love hearing their funny stories, answering their endless questions, and even the random compliments they give me—like when they tell me I have pretty eyes or quietly share funny stories about their families.

Those little conversations always make me smile.

Whenever a child becomes upset or throws a tantrum, I try to understand their feelings before reacting.

I often kneel to their eye level, speak calmly, sing little songs, or simply become playful until they feel safe again.

I've learned that children respond much better when they feel understood.

Outside of childcare, I enjoy reading, writing, journaling, watching movies, and listening to music.

I'm someone who enjoys learning, appreciates quiet moments, and also loves sharing laughter with the people around me.

Becoming an au pair is much more than travelling to another country for me but an opportunity to become part of a new family, experience a different culture, and create meaningful relationships while doing something that has always brought me joy.

I know welcoming someone into your home requires trust, and I don't take that lightly.

My hope is that your children will see me as someone they can feel safe with, and that you will see me as someone dependable, respectful, and genuinely invested in your family's well-being.

Thank you for reading my letter.

I would be deeply honoured to become part of your family's journey, and I hope we have the opportunity to get to know each other soon.

Warm regards,
Islamiyyah.
