Introduction
I live with my mom, dad, and our family dog. Afrikaans is my home language, and English is my second language. In my free time I enjoy reading, baking, volunteering, listening to podcasts, taking walks on the beach, and singing—even if I’m not the best singer!
If I described myself using words like reliable, patient, responsible, caring, and trustworthy, you would probably think, “That’s what every au pair says.” While I strive to be those things every day, I don’t believe they define me.
What defines me is the choices I make.
I chose to study Early Childhood Development because I wanted to better understand how children learn and grow. I chose to volunteer at a preschool because every opportunity to learn from children is valuable to me. Long before I knew what au pairing was, I chose to spend my weekends volunteering with children because that’s simply where my heart has always been. I believe character is shown through actions, not just words.
My love for children began when I was 14 years old. A friend and I organized community pageants for children, but what meant the most to me happened behind the scenes. I collected children from their homes, helped them with homework, taught dance routines, encouraged them when they lacked confidence, and organized family fun days where parents and children could spend quality time together. Watching children grow in confidence and seeing families come together made me realize that working with children didn’t just make me happy—it gave me purpose.
Since then, I’ve continued looking for opportunities to grow. I tutored my younger cousin in Mathematics, Literacy, and Life Skills, and today I volunteer at Little Footprints Nursery & Pre-School. My responsibilities include preparing breakfast, changing diapers, creating activities, singing, dancing, reading stories, comforting children, helping with nap time, maintaining routines, and ensuring they are always in a safe, clean, and loving environment.
One of my favourite activities with children is arts and crafts. I don’t mind getting messy because I believe that’s often when the best memories are made. I love seeing children’s creativity come to life and encouraging them to explore, imagine, and express themselves.
I have what I like to call a childlike spirit—not childish, but someone who still finds joy in life’s little moments. That same excitement carries over when I’m with children. I love baking, dancing, singing, reading stories, going to the park, playing games, and simply listening to the endless stories children love to tell. I believe childhood should be filled with laughter, curiosity, imagination, and feeling safe enough to be exactly who they are.
Although I’m naturally shy when meeting new people, I love spending time with the people I care about. I come from a close-knit family and enjoy organizing family gatherings and spending time with my godchildren, Riano and Leanke.
For me, becoming an au pair is about much more than travelling. It’s about becoming part of a family’s everyday life, experiencing a new culture, improving my English, learning a new language, and creating meaningful connections. Most importantly, it’s about being someone your children know they can laugh with, learn from, trust, and feel safe around.
As this will be my first experience as an au pair, I hope to find a loving and respectful family that values honesty, open communication, and mutual respect. I don’t expect perfection, and I don’t expect you to expect perfection from me. I simply hope we can learn from one another, grow together, and create memories that will stay with all of us long after my au pair year has come to an end.
I don’t just want to be your au pair—I hope to become someone your children will remember with a smile.
