We have 5 kids and live in beautiful Franklin, TN! Ages 8, 6, 4, 2, and 6 months. Our day has a free flow based around doing activities our kids enjoy- taking them to playgrounds, playing games, doing crafts, trips to libraries/museums/parks/zoo, freeplay, reading books, learning time, puzzles, and 1-2 times a week they do a class! Our au pair's job would be to spend time with the kids helping them do all these activities. Play is such an important part of the job!

So here's the situation: we have 5 kids, Paulina is a stay-at-home mom and TJ works from home. We are not looking for childcare that takes over completely. We are not looking for someone to come in, take over the kids, and TJ and I disappear for the day. We are looking for someone to work alongside us. Our kids are the sweetest, funniest, smartest kids around (being purely objective of course, hah!) - and we are looking for someone special who can be part of their days... build a real relationship with them... and genuinely enjoy being part of their games and activities.
Our days are not rigidly scheduled, but flow around each child's needs and the flow of the day. We might stay in and do a craft while TJ has a call, then when he's off his call and has some free time he'll take everyone out to a pond to catch fish, then go to the factory to get donuts, then in the evening do bath time, learning time, and listen to Mozart.
Since we have 5 kids, a lot of times we separate tasks. So the au pair might go outside to look at bugs with the 6 and 8 year old, Paulina does a puzzle with the 4 and 2 year old, and TJ takes care of the baby. And then we rotate. Au pair takes the baby, Paulina bakes cookies with the other 4. Then maybe the two year old wanders off during baking time, and the au pair asks her to help her take care of the baby. Or reads the two littlest ones a book.
Who takes care of which kids during the day is fluid and rotating.
So our family is not one where you are taking charge of 5 kids for the day. It is a collaborative, family-oriented role where everyone plays a part and everyone pitches in to meet the kids needs and make sure the house is running smoothly!
The au pair who would thrive and love being part of our family is one who loves the idea of a cozy family environment where everyone is together a lot and there is lots of play, laughter, love, and connection. Someone who does not need a rigid schedule to thrive, and is comfortable "going with the flow" and meeting the day with whatever it brings, and is comfortable in that flexibility. There are a lot of things our kids love to do, a lot of places they love to go, and our days are always a combination of those things.
Our family is unique in that we don't do a lot of things "conventionally". We are always looking at what would make our family healthier and happier, and making decisions based on that rather than just "doing what everyone else does". We believe that play is the most important work of a child, and we protect it fiercely! We respect our kids' autonomy, allow them to have boundaries, and teach them the limits and boundaries of others as well.
