Introduction
My name is Diantha. I am a 23-year-old South African citizen currently living in Cyprus. I am writing this personal statement because I am genuinely excited about the possibility of joining a host family as an au pair in a live-in position and becoming a caring, supportive part of your household.
Although I am an only child, I have always been the oldest in my extended family. From a young age until I was 20, I took on the important responsibility of caring for the younger children in my family. This included babysitting, helping with homework, changing diapers, preparing meals, and providing overall daily care. These experiences deeply strengthened my love for children and taught me how to be patient, attentive, and responsible. I truly enjoy being part of their everyday lives — watching them learn, laugh, and grow. I am also happy to help with homework and provide tutoring in English, drawing on my own academic background and strong English skills.
Five years ago, I moved from South Africa to Cyprus to pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, which I recently completed. Because of this background, I am more than happy to take care of children with disabilities or children with special needs if needed. Living independently in a new country has made me highly adaptable, independent, and quick to learn new things. I am a hard-working, passionate, caring, and organised person who approaches every responsibility with dedication. By nature I am an extrovert, but I also value quieter moments and balance. I am not a fussy person and I thrive in warm, family-oriented environments. I am very understanding when it comes to language barriers — my native language is English, and I can understand very basic Turkish, French, Korean, and Hindi. This helps me communicate patiently and effectively even when there are initial challenges.
I am very passionate about cooking and love preparing tasty, nutritious meals that bring people together. While deep cleaning is not my strongest area, I am reliable with light housework and always keep spaces organised and tidy. I also have a creative side that I enjoy sharing with children. I love arts and crafts, colouring, and building with Lego — activities that spark imagination and create joyful moments. In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with friends and doing my nails. Additionally, I have volunteered at pet shelters and helped organise various children’s events, experiences that have further developed my ability to care for others and adapt to different situations.
I don’t hold a driver’s licence but I am more than willing to get it and any additional tests required to meet your family’s needs. I am comfortable caring for more than one child, but to ensure I can give the best attention and care possible, I would prefer to look after a maximum of one to three children. I am fully flexible with the start date and length of the contract, as this experience is an important step before I pursue my Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology. I believe working as an au pair will give me valuable real-world insight into child development and family dynamics while allowing me to contribute meaningfully to a loving home.
Please note that I have some allergies to certain foods and heavily scented products because of my sensitive skin. These are straightforward to manage with simple adjustments, and I am always open and clear about them so there are no surprises.
Above all, I am excited about the cultural exchange that comes with being an au pair. I would love to bring my South African energy, warmth, and creativity into your family while learning about your traditions, values, and way of life. I am dedicated to creating a safe, fun, and supportive environment for the children and becoming a positive, reliable member of your household.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to connect and share more about how we could be a great match.
