Family's Introduction to Au Pair
We are an American family that recently moved to Sundsvall, Sweden. We have a 2 year old girl and an almost-5 year old boy that both attend förskola (preschool) during the day. The mother is here in Sweden with the children but the father is mainly in the USA due to work.
We are expecting a baby in November and are looking for someone with professional experience in pregnancy, postpartum, infant/newborn care, etc.
We need someone who has energy and patience, loves being outside, is willing to read the same book over and over and is not easily upset by the things small children do. We eat mostly vegetarian at home, never eat pork and do not drink alcohol. We do not have a TV, although the children sometimes get to watch movies on the computer. Other than FaceTime with family members, the children probably average less than 2 hours of screen time each week.
The bus stop is about 500m away and can bring you to the city center in about 15 minutes.
Our children speak English and Urdu as well as some Spanish. The main language spoken at home is English. We are all learning Swedish.
An au pair who is happy with us will:
Enjoy hiking and being outside, even when it's cold. We live near some great trails and Sweden is famous for embracing the outdoors.
Bundle up the kids and get outside to play, even though it sometimes takes a while to put on all their layers!
Eat mostly vegetarian meals.
We are sensitive to odors. This means we don't add strong scents to our laundry and we expect you to not wear perfume around the house. We also expect you don't smoke, even off duty, as it's a strong smell.
Redirect and engage with children who are misbehaving. We believe behavior is a way of communication and that it's often how children let us know they need our love and attention.
Calmly handle unhappy kids, hold boundaries and still be patient. Our job is to keep these kids safe and sometimes that means doing things they don't understand or like.
Respond with patience and love. For example, if the toddler stubbornly pulls off her gloves, you know there's only going to be a few minutes before she comes to you in tears with cold fingers. You warm them up, put on her gloves, and dry her tears with a kiss.
Be creative in ways to engage the kids, as we don't have a TV. Maybe it's a craft you saw on Tik Tok or you and the kids cook a meal together.
Build houses and tents out of blankets and couch cushions and think quickly when one child breaks it and the other child gets mad
Always be prepared with snacks. Kids seem to always be hungry.
Be an adult member of the family. We live together and share the home.
Bring up problems and concerns, so that we can fix them together, even if it feels uncomfortable.
Be willing to work a few hours on either Saturday or Sunday of most weeks.

We are hoping to find someone who can join our family. We need help, but we want someone who we can treat like family.
We offer weekly or monthly pay and a private room. You also have a toilet/sink to yourself but we share a shower in another room. We generally provide everything you need for daily life, we buy groceries for you and share our meals, just like we would if my own family was here.
Extra benefits are in the form of hugs from small children (often with sticky fingers), lots of snuggles and invitations to go to outer space on our couch.
