Family's Introduction to Au Pair
Hi, I’m Dusty — a single dad in Scotts Valley, California with three boys: Theo (6), Donovan (age 9), and Calvin (12).
Theo is fearless and always out front on the trail. Donovan has a genuine gift with animals — patient, observant, and somehow earns the trust of creatures that won’t go near anyone else. Calvin is twelve, deeply into science and engineering, and spending this summer building and selling computers. They’re three very different kids and all genuinely fun to be around.
We live in a big, open house in the Santa Cruz Mountains with 15 fruit trees, 40+ feet of grapevines, a trampoline under the redwoods, and doors that stay open most of the day. Every Labor Day we host a harvest party to pick and press grapes into wine with friends and family — one of my favorite weekends of the year. Redwood trails are walkable from the house and the beach is ten minutes away. Extra surfboards and wetsuits are available if you want to learn, and we plan on buying ski passes for snow skiing this winter.
The schedule rotates every other week, Friday to Friday, following a 50/50 custody arrangement with their mom. On weeks you’re with us; off weeks are entirely yours to explore, travel, or do whatever sounds good. The private room is yours the whole time.
I work from home and I’m an involved, present parent — this would feel more like a partnership than a handoff. I care most about finding someone warm, reliable, and genuinely good with kids. Outdoorsy is a big plus.

This isn’t your typical arrangement. We’re a busy, outdoorsy family in the Santa Cruz Mountains looking for someone who genuinely loves kids, thrives in an active home, and wants the freedom to make the most of one of the most beautiful corners of California — half the time entirely on their own terms.
You’d work every other week (Friday to Friday, rotating) with a private room and full board included during on-weeks. Off weeks are completely yours — surf, explore, travel, pick up occasional evening hours with a friendly nearby family if you’d like, or simply enjoy the area. We want this to feel like a good life, not just a job.
The Boys
Three kids, three very different personalities — all genuinely fun to be around.
Theo (age 6) is pure enthusiasm in human form. Always first on the trail, first to try something new, first to pull you into whatever adventure he’s dreamed up.
Donovan (age 9) is the family’s resident animal whisperer. If there’s a creature nearby — lizard, caterpillar, stray cat — Donovan has found it, named it, and is probably its best friend.
Calvin (age 12) is heading into 7th grade with a business plan already in motion: building and selling computers this summer. He loves talking science and engineering with anyone who’ll engage.
Their mom shares custody 50/50, so the home has a consistent, settled rhythm — active and full of life on kid weeks, quiet and open on off weeks.
The Home
The house is big, open, and well-suited to family life. On a warm day — which is most days — the doors stay open and the backyard becomes an extension of the living space. There’s a trampoline under the redwood trees, 15 fruit trees (apple, plum, apricot, pear, nectarine, orange), and over 40 feet of grapevines.
Every Labor Day weekend, friends and family gather to harvest and hand-press the grapes into wine together — one of the highlights of the year, and something you’d be part of. Redwood groves are walking distance away. Extra surfboards and wetsuits are on hand for anyone who wants to learn.
The Area
Scotts Valley sits in the Santa Cruz Mountains between Silicon Valley and the coast — close to both, crowded by neither. The weather is genuinely remarkable, with most days landing between 65–72°F nearly year-round. World-class surf beaches are 10 minutes away. Old-growth redwood trails are right outside the door. San Francisco and Monterey are both under 60 minutes.

What We’re Looking For

The boys are easy to love but they need someone who can hold some structure while still being fun — someone who matches Theo’s energy, earns Donovan’s trust, and can geek out a little with Calvin. Some prior experience with children matters. A love of the outdoors is a real plus. Beyond that, we care more about character than credentials.
