Family's Introduction to Au Pair

Our family of four is based in Albuquerque, NM. My husband and I are engineers in our thirties, and we both work with engineering research. We welcomed twins earlier this year; a boy and a girl who are two bubbles of pure joy. The babies are calm, curious and playful, and they usually sleep well - although some fussy days do occur! We currently share their care with my mother-in-law, who lives close by.
Being a multicultural family, we are very open and interested in learning more about different cultures. I am from Brazil, and I came to the US about 8 years ago for grad school, where I met my husband. He and and my mother-in-law are american and originally from the midwest. Both of them speak a little bit of Portuguese and would love to improve their grasp of the language.
Our activities as a family include hiking, cooking, going out to eat, building things in our garage, going to local museums, visiting national parks in the area, traveling to meet with in laws, amongst other things. My husband and I are very outdoorsy and enjoy camping as well, although the arrival of the twins put a stop on that. Nowadays, most of our outings are to explore hikes in the area, an activity that we love. New Mexico is a gorgeous state for those who enjoy nature and the landscape of the high desert. Our neighborhood is a beautiful place in the mountain foothills, and it provides a very nice and calm area for morning or sunset walks.
At home, the atmosphere is usually calm and relaxing (depending on the mood the twins are in!). We also try to keep things fun and lighthearted when caring for the twins, and have many laughs during the process. My husband and I may have a few close friends and family members visiting from time to time, although it is usually just us and the kids.
We love living in Albuquerque, and really enjoy the activities that the state has to offer. However, it is worth mentioning that this is a calmer, medium-sized city, with lots of retirees. Restaurants usually close early. Living with us is a great opportunity for an Au Pair who enjoys nature, calm, and who is looking to form close connections with a multicultural host family, but not necessarily to experience the buzz of a larger city.
Husband and I have busy schedules with work, but we will do our best to make sure that you have a very enriching experience during your stay. The ideal candidate is someone who is warm, patient, respectful, considerate, and who can operate with a certain degree of autonomy. Most importantly, the ideal candidate should really love interacting with babies, since she will spend a lot of time with the twins :)

Job Description

We are looking for a kind and energetic Au Pair to help our family care for our infant twins. The twins will be 4-6 months when you arrive - very calm, smiley and playful babies who are just starting to babble their first "words". Friends and family always remark on how easy going they are, although they do need extra love some days.
We need your help mornings and afternoons during the work week, and we will respect your time in the evenings. Vacation days and sick leave will also be included in our agreement. My mother-in-law lives close by and I work mostly from home, so you will have a lot of help from us. Your level of experience is not that critical; as long as you are caring, patient and willing to learn, we will be more than happy to teach you everything you need to know. The babies are currently exclusively breastfed, and your responsibilities will include: help with feedings, diaper changes, playtime, soothing, cuddling, bathing, going with us to pediatrician appointments, etc. For us, it is very important that you stimulate their curiosity, and that you provide them with a light, playful and nurturing environment where they can continue to thrive.
During your stay in our home, you will be treated as part of the family, and do our best to take you in family outings to make this a very rich cultural experience. You will have a fully furnished bedroom with a closet and a full bed, and a bathroom that will be mostly yours except when we have visitors. We all share house chores (cleaning, laundry, cooking, etc), and those will be your responsibility as well.
Having lived in three different countries, I know that adapting to a new culture can be difficult. We will do our utmost to make your stay with us a fantastic experience. We hope that our home can be a safe haven from where you will get to experience a new culture. Our hope is that this is just the beginning of a long-term friendship.
The ideal candidate for us is someone who is open, adaptable and responsible. We need to be able to count on you to be on duty on set times. Working with babies can be hard, so we are looking for a candidate who is patient, empathetic, energetic and very kind to care for our little ones. Our home is multicultural, and I am originally from Brazil. Speaking fluent Brazilian Portuguese is certainly a plus, as I would love for the babies to have exposure to the language. However, this is not a set requirement, and my husband and I would love to learn from different cultures as well. We very much look forward to connecting with you!
