Dear Host Family,
I want to skip the part where I list qualifications at you — you'll see those elsewhere in my application — and just tell you who I actually am.
I'm the guy who taught a room full of small children for three years and somehow still smiles when I see one coming toward me with a scraped knee and a very serious story to tell about it. I coach a football team of boys who think they're better than they are, and I've learned more about patience from an 8-year-old refusing to pass the ball than from anything else in my life. I cook — properly, not just "can survive in a kitchen" — and I'll probably try to sneak a Kenyan dish onto your table within the first month, purely because I want to see your kids' faces when they taste something new.
I'm learning piano right now, badly, one clumsy scale at a time, which means I understand exactly what it feels like to be a beginner at something in front of people which is, I imagine, a little bit how your children might feel meeting me for the first time. I plan to be patient with that, the same way I hope they'll be patient with my Deutsch.
What I want you to know, more than anything, is this: I'm not looking for a place to stay for a year. I'm looking for a family to actually belong to for a year, to learn your rhythms, your jokes, your kids' favorite games, the way your house sounds on a Sunday morning. I take that seriously, and I'll show up for it every single day, not just on the good ones.
