One of my closest friends has suffered from autism and family member who resides with us got very ill and both got into a car accident which left her paralyzed and became disabled. I can’t begin to explain the effect it had on us as we started the process of caring for them. I took up informal training with the local clinic on taking care of them and I have to say that I took up quite an interest in caring for journey.
I’ve come to acquire skills such as communication needs, Personal care – dressing, bathing, toileting, assistance with eating, sleeping support, skin care, first aid, and health promotion. Facilitating and encouraging participation in recreational and leisure activities. Encourage and promote each person’s full participation in their home while at the same time ensuring that their home and its environs are maintained to acceptable standards where each one of the family has access to comprehensive, person-centred and holistic personal support. Ensure that the religious and pastoral needs of each individual are adequately supported. Administer prescribed medications and maintain all required records. Ensure that buildings are well maintained and in good repair and bring any issues to the apartment management. Ensure that the personal clothing of individuals is looked after and cared for and that the household and bed linen is changed and laundered regularly. Maintain complete and accurate records for each person to include the personal needs assessments, risk assessments, incidents and notifiable events, file notes, communication plans, behavioural management support, health action plans, medication management.
Ensure immediate and accurate reporting of all matters of concern to the parents and doctors who regularly visit. Be responsible for the physical and emotional wellbeing of individuals who use the services. Coordinating the house by ensuring that there’s always someone to help.
It has been an experience that I would to take up more of while am on a career discovery journey. At angels international school where I currently work I have created a project day for learning about disabilities within the community for small children to learn how they can help and donate to the hospitals near by. We have learnt on how to sensitively communicate with everyone and we will keep up the good work.
The turn out was overwhelming and just gave me more inspiration to pursue caring for elderly and disabled people more. My experience has been filled with highs and lows because of how it happened but I wouldn’t want it any other way. Am sure I’d be of great assistance and an asset to the care home and I know given the opportunity we would work very well and grow together.
