Introduction
I studied Performing Arts and Film Technology, and throughout my studies I worked with students and young people from around 4 to 25 years old. I taught acting and writing at an Academy, volunteered with an LAMDA programme at an International School and interned at a Performing Arts college, where I taught acting and monologues and supported students with theatre and film projects.
My background in theatre has shaped the way I approach teaching. I enjoy making lessons interactive rather than simply talking at a student, and I naturally use storytelling, examples, creative exercises and conversation to help people understand and remember things. Theatre has also taught me to be patient and observant because every student learns differently. Some students need encouragement to speak, others need time to think, while others learn best when they can see, create or practically engage with an idea.
I am particularly interested in language, communication, literature, the arts, culture and social studies. I also enjoy research, so I am naturally curious and often find myself exploring a topic simply because I want to understand it better. I am currently developing my interests in International Studies and Area Studies, particularly around digital societies, diplomacy and cultural exchange particulary in Africa,South Korea and China. I speak English, Kiswahili and I am currently learning Korean.
Outside academics, I enjoy watching films, researching things that interest me, socialising with people close to me and making things with my hands. I have taught myself to create art objects from paper and recycled materials. I enjoy creative projects because they allow students to express themselves while developing practical skills at the same time.
I grew up around the Coastal and Mount Kenya region, where I was surrounded by farming, practical household work and a very hands-on way of life in addition to diverse cultures. This taught me to be resourceful, patient and willing to figure things out.
As a middle child, I grew up learning how to communicate with both younger and older siblings. My family placed a strong emphasis on Ubuntu, community, responsibility and global citizenship, values that continue to shape how I relate to other people.
As a tutor, I would like to create an environment where a student feels comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and being curious. I want learning to feel like something they participate in rather than something simply done to them. Whether we are working through a difficult concept, practising a language, discussing a story or creating something together, I hope to help each student build both their knowledge and confidence.
