We're a family of four living in a beautiful hillside spot in LA. I'm a writer and director — I spend my days developing film and TV projects — and I also work in commercial real estate, which is actually how we ended up appreciating this house and its quirky, wonderful guest unit so much in the first place. My wife is my creative partner in more ways than one; we build a lot of our life, work, and parenting together, which probably shows up in how we approach things like this — we like people, we like honesty, and we like doing things thoughtfully rather than just efficiently.
Our kids are the center of our household, in the best and most exhausting ways. We're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys being around children — not just tolerating them until the shift ends, but someone who finds them interesting, funny, occasionally infuriating, and worth showing up for. If you love reading to kids, playing pretend games that make no sense, explaining why the sky is blue for the fortieth time, or just being a calm, steady presence during an evening routine, we think you'd fit right in.
We also want to be upfront about who we are not looking for. We're not looking for a full-time nanny, a 24/7 on-call employee, or someone who feels like they've traded their independence for a cheap rent check. We've thought hard about this arrangement precisely because we want it to be sustainable and good for both sides — you should be able to build your own life, have friends over, come and go as you please, and generally feel like the guest unit is your home, not an extension of ours. The childcare hours will be clearly scheduled in advance, so there's no ambiguity or resentment building on either side.
As for the house itself — we hope the photos gave you a sense of it, but in person it's even nicer. The unit is private, quiet, and full of light, tucked into a hillside with mature fruit trees just outside the deck. It has its own entrance, so you're never walking through our life to get to yours. There's a shared putt-putt green and basketball court that our kids love, and that you're welcome to use anytime, whether that's just to unwind after a long day or to shoot some hoops.
We value warmth, communication, and follow-through above almost everything else. If a schedule needs to shift, we'd rather have an honest conversation about it in advance than pretend inconvenience away. Private Guest Unit + Light Childcare — Los Angeles Hillside Home

We're a family with young children living in a beautiful hillside home in Los Angeles, close to Universal Studios. We're looking for a warm, reliable person — ideally with early childhood education experience — to live in our private guest unit in exchange for a modest amount of evening and weekend childcare.

About the Space:
The guest unit is fully furnished, private, and genuinely lovely — not a converted garage or afterthought. It has its own separate entrance from the street (down a few flights of exterior stairs, so a good fit for someone who doesn't mind stairs and likes getting their steps in). Inside you'll find:
- A comfortable bedroom with a queen bed and ample closet/storage space
- A full kitchen with stove, cabinetry, and dining area
- A cozy living room with sofa, armchair, TV, and A/C
- A full bathroom
- Your own private deck, surrounded by mature fruit trees, with hillside views
- You'll also have access to a putt-putt green and basketball court on the property, which you're welcome to use and which our kids love sharing with a friendly adult.

The unit sits on a quiet, private hillside lot, but is centrally located in LA — close enough for normal city life, private enough that it feels like your own home, not a shared household.

The Arrangement
Market rent for a unit like this would typically run around $2,500/month. We're offering it at a significantly subsidized rate of $1,000/month, in exchange for approximately 30–35 hours per month of childcare, concentrated in evenings and weekends.
This is meant to be a true win-win: affordable, high-quality housing for you, and reliable, familiar childcare for our family — not a live-in nanny position, and not unpaid labor dressed up as "roommate" arrangement. Depending on how the hours and any additional care needs shake out, compensation may include an hourly rate on top of the reduced rent, consistent with California's household employment guidelines; we're happy to structure this properly and transparently from day one.

What We're Looking For
Most importantly, we're looking for someone who feels like a good fit with our family — someone kind, dependable, and easy to communicate with. Beyond that:
- Experience with young children — as a teacher, teacher's aide, nanny, or ECE/child development student
- Comfortable with basic childcare routines: bedtime, meals, light supervision, and engaged, present play
- Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license, if driving our kids may occasionally be part of the arrangement
- Someone who values having their own home and independent life — this is not an on-call or "always available because you live downstairs" situation. Hours will be scheduled in advance and clearly defined.
- Comfortable with a background check, as is standard for anyone providing childcare
- Early childhood education students, credentialed teachers, or nannies transitioning between full-time roles are all a great fit. We're especially glad to hear from people currently working or studying in early education.

Schedule:
Roughly 30-35 hours per month, primarily evenings and select weekend days/nights, set on a predictable schedule that respects your other commitments (school, work, personal life). We're flexible on exactly how this is structured and happy to find a rhythm that works well for both sides. There may be one full weekend every couple of months, for us to get away, but we will clear that well in advance.
