Introduction
For me, becoming an Au Pair is about more than just living abroad.I really want to experience everyday life in another country, not just as a visitor, but by being part of a family. Languages have always been something I really enjoy, especially English. I love how they allow people to connect and communicate with each other, and I also enjoy learning about different cultures. Because of that, I’m excited to experience everyday life in Canada, improve my English and become part of a family while getting to know the country and its culture in a much more personal way.
And then, of course, there are also the kids. I’ve always enjoyed being around them, and my three school internships confirmed this even more. My nine-week internship at a special needs school really confirmed how much I enjoy spending time with children and being part of their everyday lives. I really value the small moments you share with children, like seeing them smile about the smallest things. Through my many years of martial arts training, I’ve also had the chance to support children during their training and work with different age groups.
I’m a friendly and open-minded person who enjoys getting to know new people, having good conversations and sharing experiences. At the same time, I take my responsibilities seriously and can be calm, patient and thoughtful when needed, especially when working with children. When something is important to me, I am also very focused and disciplined, for example when it comes to school.
My Canadian work permit has already been approved, and I’m already registered with an Au Pair organization, which means the main arrangements for my stay are already in place.
What I’m hoping for
What I would really appreciate is an open and warm relationship with my host family, where we can talk openly, respect each other and feel comfortable around each other. I would love to become part of everyday family life and share experiences together, rather than feeling like I am only there to take care of the children or help around the house. For me, being an Au Pair should feel like being part of a family, while still having my own space and responsibilities.
At the same time, I think it is important to have a good balance between family life and my own free time. I enjoy spending time with people, going out and meeting friends, but I also appreciate quiet moments for myself when I can relax and recharge. I would like to have the freedom to explore Canada, meet new people and make my own experiences alongside being part of my host family’s everyday life.
I am especially looking forward to experiencing Canadian traditions and holidays, such as Thanksgiving, and seeing how they are celebrated as part of everyday family life. I would also be happy to share some of my own traditions and experiences from Germany with my host family.
I also know that living together with a new family will not always be perfect, and I think that is completely normal. For me, being able to talk openly and honestly with each other is important, especially when something does not work out as expected. I think that with respect and good communication, you can find a solution together.
My Childcare Experience
I have gained childcare experience through three school internships, including a nine-week internship at a special needs school, as well as through coaching children in martial arts.
Childcare Experience #1
Total number of hours: 315
During my 9-week internship at a special needs school, I worked with children around the age of 6 with different learning, attention and developmental needs. I supported them in daily school routines in both small groups and one-to-one situations.
In lessons, I supported reading, writing, language exercises and basic mathematics. Especially in math, I tried to make abstract content easier to understand by connecting it to everyday life. For example, I helped children understand basic addition through simple real-life situations so they could see how numbers are used outside of school and not only on paper.
Childcare Experience #2
Total number of hours: 25
In a one-week internship at a preparatory special needs educational centre, I worked with around ten children with different learning needs. I supported them in their daily routines and took part in group activities. For example, we cooked together and talked about the ingredients while preparing the food. The children helped with simple steps, and we also talked about where food comes from and how ingredients are used in everyday life.
Childcare Experience #3
Total number of hours: 20
During a short four-day internship at a primary school, I worked with children between the ages of 6 and 10 in four different classes.I supported them when they had questions or needed help with tasks. I also spent time in sports lessons and helped supervise the group.
Childcare Experience #4 total number 100 hours
