Introduction
We are a family of three residing in northern San Diego, California in a town called Carlsbad. I am Shalina, the host mom, and Cailen is the host dad. We are seeking a new Au Pair for our 5 year old daughter, Amira, to join us in March 2025. Our current Au Pair, Michaela, will be returning home after completing her program year with us. As a teacher from South Africa, she quickly developed a close bond with Amira. While we will miss her greatly, we hope to find an Au Pair who can build a similarly strong connection with our daughter.

Amira
Amira loves reading books, singing, playing with dolls, and spending time outdoors. She is an outgoing and affectionate child with a deep curiosity about the world. You will never have to guess what she’s thinking because she will always tell you what’s on her mind. Our Au Pair will need to do engaging activities with her throughout the week and assist with her daily school work. Amira learns primarily through online education at home, attending school only once a week for group activities and workshops, as traditional schooling was not sufficiently advanced for her abilities. It is essential for our Au Pair to be patient, attentive, and enthusiastic about helping Amira learn. Other daily activities may include park outings, flash card games, dress-up play, baking, and more. We follow a gentle and responsive parenting approach, having boundaries with positive but firm language which we would like you to reinforce while with her.

Host Parents
Our families are originally from India, and we are second-generation Americans. We cherish many enriching aspects of our culture but we are not actively religious and we do not have any dietary restrictions. However, we respect all religions, practices and preferences. Our family is loving, open-minded, and flexible, while prioritizing education, safety, and hygiene. Cailen has a Sales Consulting business working long hours in his home office. I work a flexible schedule as Human Resources Consultant, in addition to handling the cooking, cleaning, home projects, and errands. While I stay busy and out of the way, I'm available to provide training and support when needed. This also allows me to offer a flexible schedule for our Au Pair when requested.

Our Home
Carlsbad, a charming town in northern San Diego is known for its surfing, beer gardens, and Legoland. Unlike other major cities, San Diego offers a relaxed and enjoyable escape for those looking to unwind from busy city life. Our home is 30 minutes north of downtown San Diego and 90 minutes from Los Angeles. Our neighborhood is safe, scenic, and quiet, yet conveniently close to Bressi Village, a shopping district just a 7-minute walk away. The beaches are only 4 miles away. Our community offers a variety of amenities, including tennis courts, pickleball, basketball, a duck pond, a rose garden, playgrounds, and a community center. Additionally, while we have a small pool and hot tub in our backyard, the neighborhood also has an olympic sized swimming pool. We’re fortunate to enjoy great weather year-round, with temperatures ranging from 17°C to 35°C during the day, depending on the season. Our home is very organized and clean - we do not wear shoes inside the home. Upstairs in the main house, there are five bedrooms, including Amira’s. The bedroom downstairs was converted into Amira’s playroom, giving her a dedicated space for toys and play.

Daily Responsibilities
- Cooking and preparation of Amira’s breakfast, lunch and snack
- Hand washing her dishes with hot soapy water
- Maintaining the tidiness of Amira’s playroom and bedroom
- Taking care of her laundry - folding and putting away in drawers twice a month
- Helping her complete her daily schoolwork, walking her through the sections and explaining things if she has difficulties understanding
- Engaging with Amira. Playing age appropriate activities, teaching new vocabulary, explaining how things in the world work, reading books together. Giving her space to play alone at times occasionally while you organize her things.
- Maintaining proper hygiene: Helping her clean up after using the potty, making sure she washes her hands well, brush teeth, changing her clothes if they get dirty, etc.
- Helping her learn new skills such as riding a bike and painting.
- Taking her outdoors one or two hours a day. Playing in our backyard, going for a walk or taking her to a neighborhood park.
- Keeping the baby monitor at night once a month if we have to go out of town.
- Cleaning up after yourself and contributing as a good housemate. Since we all use the common areas such as the kitchen, living room and downstairs restroom, we all pitch in to keep those areas maintained daily. Helping clear up after dinner when joining us.
