I grew up in an African setting where caring for others was not something you were formally taught—it was simply a way of life. From a young age, responsibility was shared within the family, and older siblings naturally took on the role of caregivers. Looking after younger brothers, sisters, cousins, and even neighbors’ children was part of our daily routine. It was not seen as a burden, but as a normal and expected expression of love, unity, and community. In this environment, you learn patience, attentiveness, and empathy without even realizing it. You become observant of children’s needs, protective of their well-being, and genuinely invested in their happiness.
This upbringing shaped me into someone who is naturally nurturing. Caring for children became instinctive—whether it was helping with feeding, playing, comforting them when they cried, or ensuring their safety. Over time, this consistent exposure built a strong sense of responsibility and emotional connection to childcare. It is something that became part of who I am, rather than something I had to learn later in life.
Now, as a nurse currently working in the pediatric department, this foundation has become even more meaningful. My professional experience has allowed me to combine my natural caregiving abilities with medical knowledge and clinical skills. Working with children in a healthcare setting requires not only competence but also compassion, patience, and the ability to create a sense of comfort and trust. Children can be vulnerable, especially in unfamiliar environments like hospitals, and being able to reassure them and make them feel safe is incredibly important.
Unlike some other departments, working with children brings a unique kind of fulfillment. Their innocence, resilience, and honesty create a special connection that makes the work deeply rewarding. Even in challenging situations, a child’s smile, laughter, or small sign of recovery can make a significant difference and remind you why you chose this path. It is a role that constantly reinforces empathy and purpose.
My background, both personal and professional, has therefore equipped me with a strong foundation in childcare. Growing up in a community-oriented environment instilled in me the values of care and responsibility, while my experience in pediatrics has refined my skills and deepened my passion for working with children. Together, these experiences make me confident, capable, and genuinely committed to providing safe, loving, and attentive care to every child I look after.
