Family's Introduction to Au Pair
Job Description
We’re a Dutch/German family with a 7-year-old daughter and a soon 6-year-old son who love living in Luzern, Switzerland. Our situation is a bit special in that you will live in your own place (likely a shared space in Luzern).
Luzern is a medium-sized city, which has everything you'd want: shops, cinemas, language schools, parks and of course the mountains and the amazing lake!
We’re a very social, active, happy bunch and are looking for someone to help us look after our children and help out in the house a bit.
We live right by the lake of Luzern, which is just beautiful - you'll love it immediately! It's like a movie set really :)
We will rent a separate room for you in the area so you have a place where you can retreat at night and on days off.
Our family:
It's four of us: 6-year-old Asta, 6-year-old Bjorn and the dad (Martin) and mom (Els). We are all very active, love to exercise, hike the Swiss mountains around us, swim in the lake, and explore the city.
We both work as parents, and work from home 3 days a week.
Our background is international, we have lived in different countries and we as parents speak English amongst ourselves but we also speak German and Dutch. The kids speak fluent Swiss German, German, Dutch and are started learning English from both our former and current au pair.
The first month you will stay with us in our apartment in your own bedroom so you can get settled at your own pace if you'd like to. Then we will rent a room for you elsewhere in Luzern (it's a student city with many options close by). Our house has a room for you, but it's right by the living room where you hear everything (including the kids waking up very early) so we're more comfortable with you having a space for yourself with more privacy so you can always get good sleep and sleep in in the morning, but of course, you'd always be welcome in our house, and join us for any meals, games or just hanging out (otherwise we cover all costs of food, etc of course!). This set-up has worked very well in the past 2 years with our au pairs.
You will be with the kids 5 half days a week. Each Sunday and Monday you're off. From Tuesday-Friday Asta and Bjorn are both in school until 11:45am in the morning and then come home on some days, but on 2 other days have afternoon school and will go until 4pm. You then spend lunchtime with them, time for play in the afternoon and cooking dinner. One of us comes home at 5 pm to take over. Each Saturday evening we have a "date night" - which the kids are also very used to after two years and you come from 5:30 pm until about 10 pm.
Your time with the kids is partially spent on some light housework while they are playing (e.g., doing laundry and recycling). Some of the time is covering other hours on other days (e.g., staying longer on some workdays, putting them to bed at 7 pm, and staying until 8 pm when one of us gets home).
The days and times may vary slightly, but this gives you a good idea of a typical week.
Pocket money is 700 Swiss Francs per month (is about 700 EUR per month), as set by the Luzern kanton we live in.
Au pairs work maximum of 30 hours a week and get 4 weeks off per year. Our au pairs usually had a bit more time off, as we tend to be traveling as a family more than 4 weeks a year.
On the weekend we usually take the kids to playgrounds in the area, or we visit friends (usually with kids :)), go to the lake, go skiing, closeby swimming pools or go on a walk and sit down in a cafe in the city
