Family's Introduction to Au Pair
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our family. We are the Hare family, and we live in beautiful New Braunfels, Texas, between San Antonio and Austin. We are excited about welcoming an au pair into our home and hope to find someone who will become a meaningful part of our family while also enjoying an amazing year in America. We have four children, but our three oldest have moved out, so our 16-year-old son, Brayden, is the only child still living at home with me. Brayden has Down Syndrome and Autism. He is mostly non-verbal, but he communicates well through words, sign language, gestures, and a language app. He needs assistance with some everyday tasks, but he is also a happy, fun-loving young man who loves to laugh, swim, play basketball, spend time outside, and use electronics. It may take him some time to become comfortable with someone new, but once he trusts you, he enjoys having people around him and sharing his interests.
The au pair's main role will be helping me care for Brayden during the weekday, including helping him get ready in the morning, preparing simple meals, assisting with his daily routines, and spending time with him. We also want to help Brayden become more comfortable in the community, so taking him on simple outings such as shopping, getting ice cream, going to the park, or playing basketball will be an important and enjoyable part of the experience. I work a mix of in-office and remote days, so dependable support during the week is very important to me. At the same time, I want our au pair to have plenty of time to enjoy their own life. Most evenings and weekends will be your free time, and Fridays are generally shorter because I am home earlier. You will also have access to a car, so you can easily explore, meet friends, take classes, and enjoy everything Texas has to offer.
We live in a quiet community with wonderful amenities, including an Olympic-size pool, a lazy river, and two year-round gyms. We are also only about 10 minutes from restaurants, shopping, and movie theaters, with many things to do throughout the San Antonio and Austin areas. We are looking for someone who is kind, patient, responsible, and open-minded. Most importantly, we want someone who genuinely enjoys spending time with Brayden and wants to help him experience more of the world around him. In return, we want you to feel comfortable in our home, have the freedom to build your own friendships and experiences, and feel like you are truly part of our family. If you think you might be a good fit, we would love to get to know you and hear more about you, your interests, and what you hope to experience during your time in America.
Job Description
We are looking for a caring, patient, and responsible au pair to become part of our family and help care for our 16-year-old son, Brayden. Brayden has Down Syndrome and Autism and needs assistance with many everyday tasks. He is a happy, active young man who loves to laugh, swim, play basketball, spend time outdoors, and use electronics. Your primary responsibility will be supporting Brayden during the weekday. A typical day begins around 7:00 a.m. and generally ends around 4:00–4:30 p.m. Your morning responsibilities may include helping Brayden get dressed, assisting with personal hygiene, preparing a simple breakfast and lunch, and helping him get ready for the day. During the week, Brayden may have a teacher and ABA therapist working with him, and you may help with transitions, supervise him at home, or assist with his daily routines.
An important part of this position is helping Brayden become more comfortable in the community. We would like you to take him on simple outings such as shopping to pick up a few things, getting ice cream, visiting the park, playing basketball, or participating in other everyday activities. These outings help Brayden become more comfortable around other people and in different environments while practicing everyday community and social skills. Occasionally, I may also need your help picking Brayden up after a doctor's appointment so that I can return to work. These situations would be occasional and, whenever possible, discussed with you in advance. Friday schedules are generally shorter because I am home earlier in the afternoon, giving you the opportunity to start your weekend early. I typically do not ask for weekend assistance because I am away from home much of the week and want to spend time with my son on the weekends. On occasion, we may ask for help on a Saturday for a specific outing with Brayden, but this would always be discussed in advance.
You will have plenty of free time during Brayden's school and therapy hours, most evenings, and generally your weekends. You will have access to a car, making it easier to attend classes, meet friends, go shopping, explore the area, and experience everything that Central Texas has to offer. We are also close to several colleges and universities if you are interested in taking a class during your stay, and online courses are another option. We want you to have your own life and fully experience your time in America while also becoming part of our family. Our goal is to create a balanced experience where Brayden receives consistent, caring support while you have the freedom to make friends, travel, explore, and enjoy your year in the United States.
