Seeking Private Montessori Teacher/Support in a Beautiful Rural Setting on Hawaii’s Big Island

We invite you to join us on the Big Island of Hawaii, in a quiet/rural off-grid setting, away from the crowds, bustle, and contagion of our world today. We lead a simple yet comfortable lifestyle, focused on learning, health, and developing new skills, with everything that needs to be done when living off-grid.
We are seeking a live-in, full-time, experienced private teacher, preferably trained in the Montessori method, to guide our seven-year-old son at home. We also have a two-and-a-half year old and may ask for assistance for her. This position is available immediately and will start as a 3-month position, and can be extended, if mutually desired. We are an educated professional couple (both parents have Ph.D.s), planning to expand our family further with more children. We work from home and are always nearby. We prefer to keep our children home for as long as possible and we like the idea of home-schooling. You being comfortable with small children, teaching them all of the important skills (reading, writing, math, science, art/music, language), and working with them on outdoor chores/projects helps us achieve these goals.

It is very important to us that you genuinely enjoy being around children and can actively engage with them on a broad variety of projects. Proficiency in (and ability to teach) Mandarin, German, and/or French is a further plus, although not required, as I speak traditional Mandarin (used in Taiwan) and my husband speaks German and French, and we would like a more multi-lingual home (we currently speak English at home). Schedule flexibility is important, if the need arises (e.g. shifting to work later and/or earlier, depending on our schedule calls), but generally, we would like your help 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday. If you’d like, we can add hours to help with daily tasks or help around the house. Daily tidying/cleaning of the childcare area is expected (making this a project with our son is encouraged to teach him these skills). We’d like you to establish a weekly schedule, with input from us, as a general guide for what skills, projects, and chores you will work on with our son.

We are looking for someone who will appreciate a quiet/rural lifestyle and who does not: smoke, do drugs, drink excessively, party, or gossip (privacy is important to us). We would also like you to not use foul language or have visible tattoos or body piercings.

We have a fully-equipped camper for you to use as your private mini-home. You can also use the guesthouse classroom which is the home-base for daily adventures, while you are teaching/caring for our son. Our guests and we have all greatly enjoyed living in the camper, with its efficient and comfortable lay-out, and it will be your private domain while you’re living here. It runs on solar power and propane and has: a Queen-sized bed; pull out table; bench seating; a full kitchen (stove/oven; kitchen sink; refrigerator/freezer); bathroom (composting toilet; shower; sink); TV/DVD player; radio; closet/storage space; and a reverse osmosis system for the water system.
