Family's Introduction to Au Pair
Thank you for taking the time to look at our profile!
We are a family of seven – Mum, Dad and five children aged 4 to 12 – looking for someone who would like to become part of our family and spend a year with us in Norway.
Dad works in shipping and Mum is a priest, and between work, school, kindergarten and the children’s activities, our everyday life is active and full. The children live with us 50–75% of the time, so our house changes throughout the week – sometimes it is lively and busy, and sometimes considerably quieter.
Family is very important to us. We are lucky to have our family close by, and they are a natural part of both our everyday life and our holidays. We enjoy being at home, having dinner together and playing games, but we also like little adventures, outings and supporting each other at football and bandy matches, ballet performances – and sometimes at Mum’s church services.
We also love spending time at our family cabins. During autumn and winter, we often escape to the mountains, while spring and summer are spent by the sea. We hope our new au pair will feel welcome to join in on family trips, celebrations and experiences when you’d like to.
Our home can be busy with five children, so we like routines, organisation and having a tidy and comfortable home. We are hoping to find someone who enjoys children, is responsible and warm, and after settling in feels comfortable taking initiative and becoming part of the rhythm of our family.
Most of all, we are looking for an extra member of the family – not simply someone to work for us <3
We have had several au pairs before and have very good memories of the experiences. We know that moving abroad and into another family’s home is a big adventure, and we want you to feel safe, respected and genuinely included. At the same time, we think it is important that you have your own independence, friends and experiences while you are here. We hope Norway can become a little bit like a second home.
If our family sounds like somewhere you could imagine yourself, we would be very happy to get to know you and hear a little about who you are, what you enjoy and what you hope to experience during your year in Norway.
Warmly,
Marie Alette & family
Job Description
Our family consists of mum, dad and five children between the ages of 4 and 12. The children live with us 50–75% of the time, so although we are a big family, all five children are not always at home at the same time. Dad works in shipping and Mum works as a priest.
Everyday life with us
Our weekdays are active and sometimes busy, but we like our home and everyday life to feel organised and predictable. We value good routines, everyone contributing, and keeping our home tidy and comfortable.
The children have different interests and activities, including football, bandy, ballet, handball and tennis. This means that afternoons often involve getting someone ready for practice, driving or picking up a child, preparing dinner and generally helping everything run smoothly.
With five children and two working parents, we are not looking for someone to run our family for us. We are looking for an extra pair of hands who can make everyday life a little easier – and someone who will gradually get to know our routines well enough to see what needs to be done and take initiative.
Typical tasks will include:
• Helping with simple household tasks, tidying and laundry
• Preparing simple family meals
• Driving and picking up children from school and activities
• Occasionally helping the children get ready in the morning or for activities
• Spending time with the children and helping out where needed in everyday family life
Because driving will be an important part of the role, you should have a valid driving licence and feel comfortable driving.
Becoming part of our family
Family is at the centre of our lives. We have grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins close by and spend a lot of time together, both in everyday life and during holidays.
We are quite happy simply being at home together, cooking dinner, talking and playing games, but we also enjoy doing things together and showing up for one another – whether it is a football match, a ballet performance or a Sunday service.
During holidays and weekends, we often spend time at our family cabins. In autumn and winter, we love going to the mountains, while spring and summer are often spent by the sea. We would be happy for our au pair to join us on trips and family occasions when she wants to.
At the same time, we think it is important that you have your own life in Norway. You will have your own private space in our home, regular time off and the freedom to make friends, explore Oslo and Norway, travel and enjoy your time here.
What we offer
You will receive NOK 7,000 in monthly pocket money, as well as free accommodation and meals. We also provide a public transport pass and mobile phone subscription.
Most importantly, we offer a safe and welcoming home where we genuinely want our au pair to feel like an extra member of the family rather than simply someone who works for us.
We have had several au pairs before and have very positive experiences with welcoming someone new into our family. We understand that moving to another country and into another family’s home is a big step, and we want you to feel comfortable, included and respected – while also having privacy and independence.
Who we hope to find
We would love to find someone who is warm, responsible and genuinely enjoys being around children. With five children, our house can be lively, so it helps if you are calm, flexible and comfortable when several things are happening at once.
We particularly value someone who is independent and takes initiative. You do not need to know how everything works from day one – we will teach you our routines and help you settle in – but over time we hope you will become someone who notices that a load of laundry needs doing, starts preparing dinner or helps a child get ready without always needing to be asked.
We value kindness, trust, open communication and a good sense of humour. We hope to find someone who wants to experience Norway and become part of our family for a year – sharing both the ordinary weekdays and some of the adventures along the way.
If this sounds like the kind of family life you would enjoy, we would love to hear from you!
