| Au Pair job description |
| Caroline is disabled by Multiple Schlerosis but she is fine mentally. She goes around in an electric powered wheelchair.
Duties average up to 11.5 hours per day (+'on call' free time of 4 hours) during a 3 1/2 day/40hour 'duty' week (plus 1 night 'on call' from 11.30pm to 8.30am on one of other 3 1/2 days). Duties are getting Caroline up, serving breakfast, light lunch and supper, kitchen cleared and Caroline helped to bed ; also washing, ironing and assisting Caroline with her emails/calls . Aupairs order all food online which is delivered twice per week. Nearly all meals are fresh but partly prepared so expertise in food preparation is not essential.
Caroline also needs help to get undressed before toilet, moved from electric wheelchair to toilet chair, dressed afterwards and moved back to electric wheelchair. Often she gets a spasm during the day and needs help in getting undressed to go to bed for a time. Cleaners come weekly and do all normal cleaning. |
| Family's Message to Au Pairs |
| We live in North London (9 km north of Oxford Street) in a London area called Muswell Hill/Highgate. Our home is 5 minutes walk from a frequent 24 hour bus route to the centre of London and 12 minutes walk from Highgate subway station---25 minutes to Oxford Street, Trafalgar Square and Big Ben! We are within walking distance of several language schools and 10 minutes walk to a lively shopping, restaurant, bar and night life area. Although, because of her Multiple Sclerosis, Caroline goes around the house on an electric powered wheelchair, she keeps active by meeting and phoning people. She works a little each day using her laptop and is on the committee of a local old people's home and helps run the local Christian bookshop. She has diplomas from French and German language schools and is interested in talking to you a lot and helping you speak good English.
We are able to offer a nicely furnished large bedroom/sitting room with its own desk, easy chair, TV, free exclusive use of in-room wi fi connected computer for surfing, email and Skype and a separate fixed phone-line.
Jonathan is a chartered accountant, working from home, involved in business development in Less Affluent Countries. About every month, business associates stay from various parts of this world. He is on his computer and Skype a lot! Once or twice a week, he goes out to meetings for half a day. Every 3 months, he travels overseas for a week or so. We started having an au pair in early 2005 and it worked really well. In mid-2005, she was joined by a 2nd au pair. In order to provide 7 days per week care for Caroline, each 'Au Pair Plus Plus' covers for the half of the week that the other does not. This has worked really well with Marie (from France) who has been here since September 2009 (and plans to stay here until February 2010) and Sona (from Slovakia) who has been here since September 2009 (and will stay here until at least August 2010). So we need a new au-pair in February 2010. Before Marie & Sona, we had au pairs from Romania, Czech Republic, Poland, Spain, Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland & Brazil.
Each au pair has a separate large room with separate TV and separate use of 2 bathrooms!
As usual, we pay for all food and other household necessities and we eat as a family, including days off, if you wish. The tax-free weekly allowance is $230/Euro155/£140(beyond the top of the UK 'Au Pair Plus' rate to allow for the 10 extra 'duty' hours + 1 night 'on call' per week compared with the 'Au Pair Plus' week of 30 hours).
On your days off, there are opportunities to have fun with people you meet at language school. There is also a local group of 40 or 50 under-30 non-British people who meet nearby each Monday evening for social activity. If you want to earn extra money, there are many jobs in local restaurants, in house cleaning services for people in Muswell Hill and in baby-sitting in the evenings for parents in Muswell Hill. Typical pay rates are $9/Euro7/£6 per hour free of taxes. |
