I was an au pair for this family for a few months in the swiss summer of 2006. Although Amelie was a deligthful little girl, I had an awful time working for Nicole. My first impression was not a pleasant one and it continued as such. painfully unwelcoming, I suffered much in the way of rudeness from her. Instead of treating me as a member of the family, I was looked upon as a lesser being, not worthy of being spoken to out of work hours. The whole situation was very upsetting and, in the end, I asked for a few days either side of a weekend to visit my father who was going to Geneva for work as a means to recuperate, take time out and return to work happier and better adjusted.. Instead, I was asked to leave at the end of the week. That last week was particularly painful as I was not spoken to. On my last day, they allowed an 18 year old girl to walk to 40 minute walk to the train station in the dark and in the rain alone with 35 + kilos of luggage in her hands, not entirely sure where she would end up. The job isn't particularly rigorous, and as I said, Amelie was a lovely gir. Future au pairs may even take a liking to Marco-I did. However, if it is a friendly working environment that you crave, or the touch of 'family away from home' I advise that this is not the position for you. I firmly believe in the proper treatment of au pairs...i had too many awful experiences, as did many of my friends in a huge network of countries. Rudeness is inexcusable in my mind, and unfortunately this family embodied it.

I would like to make clear that Kerry's comments are completely wrong and I am sorry to say that I cannot recommend her as an au pair if families read this comment. She was an au pair in our family for exactly one week two years ago. She told us that she was an au pair in Paris before with an agency but had difficulties with the family. Unfortunately, we didn't check her references nor the agency (we would act differently now). She told us she spoke German, which turned out to be a complete lie. Admittedly, it was our fault not to have checked it first.

Regarding her job as au pair: she was neither interested in talking care of our daughter as agreed nor did she made an effort to become a good au pair. Regarding light household work, which was agreed upon beforehand, again, it wasn't her cup of tea. On the contrary: we had more work with her than without cleaning up the mess behind her (e.g. flooding the bathroom after taking a shower and expecting us to clean up behind her). She was inmature, messy, lacked politeness and manners and was not willing to integrate in our family. All in all: a very unsuitable au pair.

Not surprisingly, she told us after a week that she didn't feel comfortable with us and that was mutual. When she said that her father would be in the area for business purposes, we suggested to go back with him to Australia because not only was she incapable to work as au pair, she seemed to be also homesick, so we thought the best solution for all would be her leaving asap. She was very relieved that she could quit her job so quickly (and leaving us behind with no backup for the childcare). My husband suggested to take her to the station but she preferred to go on her own which she did. Since then, we never heard again from her. Fortunately, we found a very good au pair after her who made up for the bad experience we had with her.

We can provide references from happy au pairs who enjoyed staying with us and with whom we are still in regular contact.
