| I worked for this family for just 3 weeks and left because of constant harassment. I worked from 7 am to 10 pm most days, spending the majority of my day doing housework, which was never completed to Celia’s satisfaction. She yelled at me and belittled me in front of the children. Aside from whether or not I was an effective worker, Celia’s treatment of me when I gave my notice, was appalling.
I decided that I could not continue to work under her conditions and gave notice of my intent to leave, thinking that this would give her time to put some other childcare in place. However Celia screamed at me and told me to get of the house right then. (about 9pm on a Sunday). She packed my belongings and me into her car and took me to the station, which was closed. We then returned home where she told me I could sleep in the garage and she would take me back to the train in the morning. Luckily I had contacted my relatives who organised someone to pick me up. I left the house just after midnight, after sitting on the stairs to wait, as I was told that I was not to use any power.
She did not pay me my last week’s wages and, conveniently, couldn’t find the Christmas presents that my mother had left with her for safe keeping, until Christmas. None of these things have been returned to me, despite repeated requests for them.
It is immaterial whether I was doing a good job or not (I was certainly trying to do it to the best of my ability), her treatment of me at the end was shocking and irresponsible. |
