Complaint   >> Posted: Mar 21 '07 by Christina in Alaska, United States
I received an email 3/21/2007 inviting me to be an aupair for the following family. It definitely sounds like a hoax (too good to be true) and possibly part of the Nigeria scandal noted throughout the website. Here is the email word for word:

Hello aupair,

We are a family who require your services as an aupair. My wife and I are from Bahamas but we currently reside in Nigeria where we work. We currently have an aupair from America whom has stayed with us for six months but she would be getting married soon to a Nigerian man as such we would be glad if seize this opportunity as we would like to build our wonderful family with you.

I am a production Engineer with Chevron-Texaco Nigeria though I do have a tight working schedule, I enjoy going for walks in the glorious Obudu hills or playing video games. My wife is a teacher at the local high school here in Nigeria where she teaches biology to a range of children. In her spare time she enjoys she enjoys painting.

We have an energetic and delightful child, Jasmine aged 3 years, and we do not require much babysitting in the evening which means that you are free to enjoy these as you wish. On your days off you can enjoy the Nigerian sun on one of the many beautiful beaches just a short drive away. We also have a summer house by the lake which we would like you to spend some time with us in. We also have a maid who would assist you in seeing to the dietary needs of our kid. We would like an au pair who will fit in with our lifestyle and enjoy their time with us. You have a tastefully furnished live-in accommodation.

If you agree to take the position you shall be paid $3000 (Three Thousand Dollars Monthly) at every month end by Chevron-Texaco Nigeria as this part of our contract with them as an expatriate staff. You would be given a weekly pocket money of $400 from our purse, which would be reviewed from time to time. We know the amount sounds very high but I and my wife had to agree with a good price to enable optimum performance from you, we love our son and would like the best for him. To this effect your residence shall be comfortably furnished within the Company housing estate. We are comfortable here as Chevron-Texaco Nigeria pays us well however we cannot work effectively and take care of our son hence our solicitation to you to come and Nanny for us.

I usually go on offshore duties for a month and take a month rest before proceeding for another offshore visit but my wife is usually at home each time each time I go for such duties.

You shall undertake the following duties if you accept to work with us:

1. Care for & stimulate the child both mentally & physically, to ensure their intellectual, physical & social development.

2. Find out about activities in the local area. Ensure that the child get regular fresh air & exercise.

3. Plan & undertake activities on a one to one basis & with the child. Develop speech, reading, numbers, letters, colors, social & practical skills.

4. Organize & prepare a healthy, varied & well balanced diet of home cooked food. Eat with the child & supervise meal times, encouraging proper use of cutlery, & behavior.

5. Look after child's physical well being - wash & bath them daily, help them to dress & undress, cut nails weekly, ensure hair is cut regularly, & that shoes get refitted regularly.

6. Look after all the child's clothes. This includes all washing; ironing by the weekend, shoes regularly cleaned, clothes & soft toys mended; Put aside clothes that no longer fit.

7. Keep child's room clean & tidy. We had a Nanny but she is getting married hence would be moving with her Husband. Should you accept to take up the position with us, we shall negotiate on your starting date as we will help you in making travel arrangements to Nigeria.

Send us your referees so that we can get in touch with them. Should the outcome be positive, we would then invite you to come and Nanny for us. I do hope you consider a position with us and you would not regret it.

Feel very free to ask question when ever you feel like as we would like to treat just as a close relation of ours, also find as am attachment to this email is a picture my wife, son and I.

Have a splendid day as you work towards building your career with us.

Best regards, Martin Collins. Liz & Martin +234 803 487 9830 martincollins@chevron-texaco.net
