Family's Introduction to Au Pair
Our Family
We are a family of 3 with my 7-year-old daughter and a lovely siberian cat. My daughter attends a school where they speak both English and French and we both also speak a little bit of Korean. I am a hard working professional and I pride myself in arranging our family life so that we have a good amount of high quality family time and life experiences.
I believe in guiding principles and values rather than rules. In our home it is simple -- mutual respect for each other and being a role model. We cherish values like optimism, humor, genuineness, humility, a growth mindset, critical thinking, autonomy, self-care, in order to develop our potential as human beings. We prioritize non-violent communication, self-awareness, and responding to needs rather than reacting to emotions.
Our living situation
We live in a spacious house with a garden and amazing views (including from your window) where you will have your own private room and there are plenty of other areas for you to go to have your own space and plenty of storage. Unlimited WiFi and, most importantly, a happy home filled with laughter to welcome you.
Our house in La Croix sur Lutry is a 3 min walk from public transportation and a number of local amenities, including grocery stores, restaurants, bakery, café, a fitness center and a tennis club, all of which are within walking distance of our home.
Our region
La Croix sur Lutry is a charming village located in the Lavaux region of Switzerland’s Canton of Vaud. The village is situated on the north-eastern shore of Lake Geneva, offering stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.
La Croix sur Lutry is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lavaux, which is known for its terraced vineyards that date back to the 11th century. The village is well-connected to the nearby cities of Lausanne and Vevey by public transport, with both cities being reachable within 20 minutes.
The region is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with the mountains offering excellent opportunities for skiing, hiking and watersports. Major airports and train stations are easily accessible from La Croix sur Lutry, making it an ideal base for exploring the rest of Switzerland and beyond.
What we do in our free time
We feel very fortunate to be living in this part of the world. We spend as much time as possible outside (skiing, skating and sledging in the winter and hiking, swimming, kayaking, and water sports in the summer). Indoor we love reading, crafting, drawing, playing music (flute and guitar), building with Lego, board games and the watching the occasional movie. We have a small garden patch and we grow some fruits and veggies as a hobby in the spring and summer.
As we both have full schedule in the week we spend as much time together on the weekends. You are welcome to tag along our family activities if you are interested though there's no obligation. We travel abroad several times per year during school breaks as we are in the heart of Europe (and you do not have to travel with us).
Other things our au pair should know
This will be our first au pair experience, however I did have experience sharing a home with roommates, we know what it is like to live abroad and are aware of the challenges and opportunities. We had long running experience with babysitters who can serve as a reference if you want to know more about us. I will happily put you in direct contact with them so you can find out what we are really like. This is an important decision and we wish you luck in finding a happy family.
If we have missed anything in our profile that you wanted to know please reach out. And if our family resonates with your values and goals, we'd love to hear from you!
Job Description
We have both full days during the week, we drive through the forest and past the lake for school. My daughter goes to school from 08:45 till 16:00 Mon-Tue-Thu-Fri (08:45 till 12:30 Wed). After school, we enjoy with her some fun time either outside on the way back or at home, she practices a bit of music then dinner and bedtime routine till 20:00. I'm going to the office most days ~09:00 to ~18:00 and work in my home office generally on Wednesday and Friday. On Fridays my daughter goes to music school. On Wednesday nights and every second Saturday night she sleeps at her mom's home.
Your routine only matches ours before and after school (exact schedule to be discussed), helping my daughter to prepare to go to school in the morning, picking her up after school and take care of her till dinner time. Most days I'm going to have quality time with her after dinner, then do the bath and bedtime routine (1-2 days I would like you to take care of her till bedtime).
Before school pick-up how you spend your time is up to you (please embrace the area!) and what needs doing (help with groceries), dinner prep (which can all be done on one day and heated up or can be made daily), light tidying (we have a cleaner coming once a week).
Tasks, schedule and pocket money
Please see above for schedules. I hope that the below will communicate both the what (tasks) and the how. As for pocket money, I pay au pair rates which is dictated by statute in Switzerland on top of housing and meals provided.
There is the nurturing bit of being part of our family team-- Can you read children of their age? Gain and maintain their trust? Help them develop resilience, confidence and guide them to be empathetic, caring humans? Will you be present (no phones, little screen time) patient and adaptable? Do you truly love being with them (because they, above all others, can tell)? Are you able to weather their storms and when things are frustrating (which is often) and always ask how you can help them?
Then there is the practical bit -- You are a valued member of this home and your primary role is to be part of the team. Main duties are helping to care for my daughter which consists of no more than 30 hours a week of things such as school pick up (being able to drive is essential), quality time (playing, exploring, discussing), cooking, grocery shopping, keeping the place tidy and organized (note we have a cleaner) and then after school care as described in the routine.
Then there is the adult bit -- Are you able to share another's home? Respect the importance of another adult's need for time, space and for maintaining a clean and tidy home environment? Can you put others needs as being at least equal to your own? Finally, are you ready to embrace a new journey and have a little fun with a family that loves to get the most out of life?
