Family's Introduction to Au Pair

Dear Candidate,
Thank you for taking the time to read about our family and this role. Before anything else, we want you to get a feel for who we are — because the right person isn't just someone with the right qualifications, but someone our home and our way of life genuinely suit.

We're a bilingual Japanese family, raising our young child in both Japanese and English. Our life follows the seasons. For about half the year we live in Aso-gun, Kumamoto — a quiet, breathtakingly beautiful part of rural Japan, surrounded by mountains, open sky, and a slower pace of living. We then spend a few months in Thailand, and a month or two travelling to other places. It's a wonderful, unusual life, and it asks for someone who is just as happy in stillness and nature as they are on the move.

What we're really looking for is not a short-term helper, but someone who wants to become part of our family for many years — to grow alongside our child, to be trusted, valued, and well cared for in return. Caring for a 1- to 3-year-old is tender, important work, and we don't take lightly who we invite into that closeness.

We'll be honest with you, because we'd want the same: this life is rich but it isn't for everyone. There are long, peaceful stretches in the countryside far from city life. There's a lot of travel, which is exciting but also asks for flexibility and a love of being on the move. And there are practical realities — a valid passport, references, certifications — that we'll need to work through carefully and openly together. We'd rather have those honest conversations early than find a mismatch later.

In return, we offer a real home, your own private space, a competitive and genuinely long-term package, all travel covered, proper time off and home leave, and our commitment to looking after the person who looks after our child. If you stay and grow with us, we'll make sure that loyalty is rewarded.

If, reading this, you feel a quiet yes — if a life of nature, travel, family, and a little one to love sounds like the kind of chapter you've been hoping for — we would love to hear from you. Tell us about yourself, your experience with young children, your languages, your situation, and what draws you to a life like ours.

We're looking forward to meeting you.

Job Description

Live-in Nanny (EN or JP language) — Long-Term, for a Toddler (Japan • Thailand • Travel)
The family. We're a bilingual Japanese family (Japanese & English) looking for a warm, experienced, long-term nanny for our young child (currently 1–3 years old). Our life moves with the seasons:

~6 months in Kumamoto, Japan (Aso-gun) — a peaceful, beautiful rural setting surrounded by nature.
A few months in Thailand.
1–2 months traveling to other destinations.
We want someone who will genuinely become part of our family and stay with us for many years.

The role. Primary, hands-on care for a toddler: daily routines, feeding, sleep, play, early learning, language development (both Japanese and English), outdoor time, and travel. Live-in, with your own private room/quarters. Some light child-related household help (child's laundry, tidying, meal prep for the child). This is a childcare role, not general housekeeping.

You are:

Experienced specifically with children aged 1–3, with 2–3 references from families with same-age kids.
Holder of a current paediatric/infant CPR & first-aid certificate.
Fluent in either Japanese or English (tell us your level in each).
Holder of a valid passport with long validity, happy to travel internationally for extended periods.
A driver (licence valid).
Comfortable, water-aware around a toddler; basic swimming competence a plus.
Calm, reliable, discreet, low-drama, and genuinely happy living part of the year in a quiet rural setting.
Looking for a long-term, multi-year placement.
Nice to have: a formal early-childhood/childcare qualification (ECE, Montessori, or Japanese hoikushi); experience traveling or relocating with a family.

We offer: a competitive long-term package, private accommodation, all travel and lodging on family trips, paid time off and annual home leave, annual reviews/raises, and multi-year loyalty bonuses for the right person who grows with us. We structure the role as a renewing annual contract after a probation period, with the clear intention of a many-year relationship.

To apply: tell us about your experience with 1–3 year-olds, your Japanese and English levels, your passport/nationality, your driving status, and why a long-term, traveling, partly-rural role suits you. Please include references.
