Introduction
I have always enjoyed spending time with children and being part of their growth and development. Over the years, I’ve gained experience caring for children both within my family and through volunteer and academic work.
One of my most meaningful experiences has been helping care for my niece’s two children. Because she works full-time, I often looked after them while she was at work, usually one or two days a week. When I first started caring for her eldest child, he was about one year and three months old, so I gained experience caring for toddlers from a young age. Over the years I continued spending time with them regularly, and it has been very special to watch them grow. Today they are 7 and 5 years old. Through this experience I became comfortable with responsibilities such as supervising playtime, preparing meals, helping with daily routines and keeping children engaged and entertained.
I have also volunteered at my church’s kindergarten, where I helped run Sunday school while parents attended the service. This involved caring for groups of children and teaching simple lessons in a fun and engaging way. Each week we created activities and small projects to help make the lessons memorable and enjoyable for the children. This experience helped me develop creativity and patience when working with young kids.
In addition to this, I completed practical training at an orphanage as part of my Bachelor of Social Work studies. During my time there, I worked closely with children from different backgrounds and supported them in their daily routines. My role included spending time with them, assisting with activities, and helping create a safe and supportive environment where they felt cared for and valued.
Studying social work has also given me a deeper understanding of children’s emotional and developmental needs. It has taught me how important patience, empathy and positive communication are when working with children.
Overall, my experiences have helped me become confident, attentive and compassionate when caring for kids, and I truly enjoy creating a positive and supportive environment where they can feel happy and secure.
