Family's Introduction to Au Pair

Dear Nanny,
We are looking for a nanny that is interested in developing a long term and meaningful relationship with our family. The nanny must truly LOVE kids as we have 2 very active children. We value family time, church, traveling and spending time with friends. We want a nanny that is willing to try new activities, is able to develop relationships with other parents/nannies/au pairs for play dates and is willing to share new things with our family. We would also want the nanny to get involved, along with our children, in cultural activities in our community. We are looking for a nanny that truly LOVES kids, is flexible and reliable.
Our family consists of myself (Jillian), my husband Chris and our two children. Most of the time, Chris' mom also stays with us. My husband and I are both medical doctors and are thus very busy with work. Although, work is very busy we both spend a lot of time with our kids and attend their activities. The kids attend a Chinese immersion school, where they are instructed in Chinese for half the day. They also both attended Spanish immersion preschool. They are involved in sports, piano and various other after school activities. They will need to be driven to these activities, sometimes on Saturdays.
My husband and I are involved in the church and in our community. We sometimes need to attend events in the evenings or give talks. This may delay us from getting home at our usual time on occasion. In general, most work weeks should be about 40-45 hours. Prior to COVID-19, we traveled as a family every few months to visit family or vacation and had individual business related trips throughout the year as well. This may resume at some point. If we need help with child care during the personal trips, we may ask you to accompany us. If we don't need assistance, you will be free to use your vacation time or in some cases be paid even though you won't be working. If you wish to go on these trips, we would figure out the additional costs you would be responsible for.
As far as the housework, we have a housekeeper that will come to clean approximately every other week. We work as a family to keep our home clean and organized between these visits. We expect you to help keep the children's bedrooms and bathrooms cleaned and to do their laundry weekly. We also expect you to clean up after yourself and to help the children clean up after themselves. We expect that dishes will be washed or put in the dishwasher. At times, this may require emptying clean dishes from the dishwasher. You should plan to prepare most of the children's meals. We take meals in the kitchen/dining area and do not wish to have meals eaten in other parts of the house.
We live in Anchorage, Alaska but we are originally from the East Coast. We have lived many places, including NYC and the Washington D.C. area before moving to Anchorage over 5 years ago. Many people love to travel to Alaska to see the Northern Lights, to hike, to visit Denali (the tallest mountain in North America and the second tallest in the world), to fish for salmon or halibut and view the beautiful scenery. Anchorage is small compared to the other cities we have lived in, but offers so many cultural activities and has people from all over the world. There are many activities and adventures in Anchorage. It does get cold and snows during the winter which makes it a very beautiful winter wonderland, but can be tricky to drive in. You should be a GOOD DRIVER. Everyone here enjoys the snow and many participate in winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding. Summers are also very beautiful and warm and the sun shines about 20 hours a day! My family is not "outdoorsy" but we are learning. We play outside in the snow with our kids, take them sledding and hopefully will learn to ride snow machines. Generally, we like to watch movies and television, sing and have friends over.
Some weekends we spend going to our kid's activities and friend’s birthday parties. Other weekends we are preparing to have a party at our home for a birthday or just gathering to relax (again pre-COVID). It is important to us that you enjoy our city and become a part of our family.

Job Description

Our typical day varies as we are both physicians and have various other obligations. We are also very involved with our children's school and extracurricular activities. On a typical day, the AuPair/Nanny will help the kids get ready starting at 7:00am, prepare and feed them breakfast and leave by 8:30am to drop them off at school by 8:50am. Both kids are in school until 2:30 or 3:30pm depending on afterschool activities and attend different schools, though they are close. There will probably be on average about 1 hour or less of housekeeping each day: tidying the kids rooms, doing the dishes from the morning and/or meal prep/laundry for the kids. We expect the kids to be orderly and the AuPair/Nanny should help with this, which will minimize the work that has to be done after drop off. They also often have after-school obligations. We typically get home from work around 7pm. The kids should ideally eat dinner around 6 if they don’t have activities. After dinner, the kids typically do homework, practice piano, play outside, read or play games until bedtime. In the past, we have paid around around $400/week in addition to room and board. During the day, there are sometimes opportunities to work in one of our offices for additional money.
