| Dear Host Family,
My name is Charlotte , I’m turning 19 soon. I live in France, near Caen. Caen is in the northern part of France, only three hours from Paris, the capital. I live in what Americans would call a suburb, in a house with my parents, my sister and my brother, but I don’t have pets. I’m in college. I’m studying for a degree in foreign languages. And I’ve added to these studies more specific classes (such as law and economics classes) in order to work in the future in international trade. I really like what I’m doing and I’m pretty good at it. In fact, I finished at the top position out of 300 students this year.
Well, when I’m not with my friends and family or when I’m not working, doing my homework; I also have lots of things to do by myself. I have always something to keep myself occupied, I draw, I paint, and I create. I create jewelry with pearls; I also create photo albums for my friends and me, using the scrap booking technique. I do listen to music a lot. Music from all around the world but I have a preference for Spanish, British and American music. I also love singing and dancing. I really feel concerned by cinema since I’m 14; this happened to interest me very much. So, I’ve been doing as much as possible to learn about cinema in general. But also the different methods a director uses to shot a movie, a musical or even series. I did already learn a lot about it but I’m sure this is only a small percentage of the huge industry it is. The thing I would qualify as a passion in my life is basketball. Well, as long as I can remember basketball has always been present in my life. Surely because my father played and still plays basketball. He loves this game and I think he transmits to the whole family the way he feels about it. I also love swimming. I do swim a lot (4 to 5 times a week). I love being in the water. And I’d love to learn how to surf and to dive. I am someone who takes the opportunity when it shows up. I enjoy traveling and I’ve already traveled a lot considering I’m only 18, thanks to my parents. I’ve been to Spain, once a year for years, to Italy and to the US, twice. I think the fact that I love traveling so much is linked to the way I feel about speaking foreign languages. Visiting countries and being with native speakers is, in my opinion, the best way to be more comfortable when you speak and to improve the way you speak. My parents, family and friends are totally supportive of me about this. In fact, I speak English with my friends and sometimes with my family more than I speak French with them. I think after all the things you’ve learnt about me and the things I like doing, I’m just going to add few adjectives that I think well-qualify myself: calm, patient, careful, caring, conscientious, helpful, ambitious, hard working, imaginative, painstaking, energetic, generous, humble, mature, flexible and respectful.
I would like to be an au pair because I love kids. I like looking after them and just being with them, playing with them, inventing games for them, reading them stories … I have already took care of many children. Most of the time, it was occasionally. I look after them because their parents were invited for diner or had to work late. But I also did baby-sitting weekly. And I also feel attracted by the US for a long time now. I’m sure this experience of au pair in the US can only be an advantage for my current and further objectives in life. As I said before I’m studying foreign languages and being bilingual would be a good point for me. But I’m not thinking of learning English only considering my career in the future, a career in which English will be essential for sure. I just want to speak good and fluent English for me at first because I have been learning English for years, almost nine, and for me being bilingual is the final point of all these years, I would really be happy to have this opportunity. I do think this is only possible when you live at least a year in the country because learning from books at school is not the same as learning in the “context”. In fact, you never learn a language without learning both the culture and the way people live. That’s why I think an immersion and being considered as a part of an American family by taking care of the children is the best way to get the level I’d like to have in English, as I said above. Moreover, it’s really instructive to see how people live in another country.
I’m completely ready and totally motivated to move to the US for a year and take care of your children but also to be part of the American society. I hope to hear from you soon and I am already excited to get to know your family, especially the children, but also the place where you live.
Sincerely yours,
Charlotte |
