| Family's Message to Au Pairs |
| We have two girls, Camille nine and Amandine five, who are both full of fun but quite different from each other. We are a bi-lingual family speaking both French and English at home, Mum speaks French to the girls, Dad speaks English to them, and they speak a mixture to each other! They are quite easy and fun to look after (and good most of the time!), of course like all children they will test the boundaries and the phrase “up we go, it’s time for bed” sometimes needs repeating before having an effect! But all previous au pairs have lived to tell a happy tale! Mum and Dad both have busy schedules so we need a little extra help. The position is part-time around twenty to thirty hours per week and a combination of looking after the girls and helping with the housework. A typical 20 hour week might be around thirteen hours with the children and seven hours of housework. Obviously there are fixed times for looking after the children, but the household chores can be done to suit, mainly help with the laundry (hanging, folding, putting away – we only iron what’s necessary!) and cleaning. The main thing is to have a flexible approach. For the children it could involve picking Amandine or Camille up from school and then helping with playing, homework, dinner, bath and bedtime, but most of all being loving, caring, and firm in all that you do with them. Babysitting up to two evenings a week, though sometimes none. Weekends are free, although we will ask for some evening babysitting on some weekends.
Something to think about…………being an au pair is most of all about helping to care for our two girls, all the other good things like discovering another country, culture, meeting new people, and travelling can go along with the job, but if you put these things first you will probably be frustrated. It is after all a job in one place for most of the time. So think about this carefully and settle in your heart that you want to be an au pair at least as much as you want to travel. That being said we have had several au pairs now and it has worked out very well in nearly all cases and we are still in touch with many of them. So we look forward to meeting you soon!! An au pair that wants to be part of our family during her stay is the kind that seems to work best for us. Of course you will have plenty of time to yourself too as most weekends are free but you will be welcome to join in whatever we’re up to if you want to! We often do Church on a Sunday morning and if you want to join in that’s fine but no problem if that’s not your thing.
We live in a town called Colomiers, just outside Toulouse. We live in a pleasant spot with a nice garden, pool and trampoline (the girls love both!) and five minutes walk from the park. We are ten minutes from the station where trains run to Toulouse, and there free buses around Colomiers. You will also be able to enrol in free French classes (there can be a waiting list), and obviously we can help you improve your French too. Toulouse itself is a lovely city with lots happening and lots of young people as it is big university city. Round about Toulouse is very pleasant countryside and we are about an hour’s drive from the Pyrenees and an hour and a half from the Mediterranean Sea. |
