| My name is Marie, I am 21 years old and I live in the center of Brussels (Belgium) in my own little flat for two years, I am currently working in a baby nursery of 28 lovely children aged between 0 and three.
The first reason why I would like to be an au pair is that I want to discover another lifestyle, a new culture, a different way of bringing up children. I also would like to be au pair to improve my English, it would be a benefit for me, and it would allow me to widen my experience.
I'm working in a wonderful nursery « Happy Feet » with my lovely little children. We are four nurses looking after about twenty children. In the morning we usually play with them. At around eleven o clock we start preparing the table for lunch and sing all together songs. At noon, they eat healthy, fresh and varied food that we personally prepare everyday. They then have a nap until 2 p.m. but each child has his own rhythm and we try to respect it. In the afternoon, they eat either mixed fruit or cut fruit (for the elders), and then we go on playing with them until they parents come and fetch them. Games are various and are adapted to children’s age but we try to renew it regularly in order to avoid routine. We’re inspired a lot from the books and method of the famous pediatric psychiatrist Françoise Dolto. What we try to achieve in "Happy Feet" is to create a kind of little society or social group in which every child feels free to express himself, respecting certain rules and limits, but where everyone finds his place. Thanks to my exceptional boss, I have the opportunity to attend trainings and seminars; the last one was entitled « Endarteriectomy and cardiac resuscitation ».
What I mostly enjoy in my job is all the love I receive from those children. It makes me feel so happy to see them growing up day after day. Also, they are so different from one another. With them, I discover everyday how surprising children can be.
I do think that I have a considerable advantage on other au pairs because I understand the meaning of being with several children everyday and how difficult it can be. I realize that for one year, they will be at the heart of my life and I think to be enough experienced to face that. I’m not anguished from living one year far from my family because I already live in my own flat, I’m already independent
Every summer, I work in the rest home where my mother works and I appreciate that very much, I like being in touch with persons who have experienced a lot of things along their lives.
During my free time, I like reading, going out with friends, visiting my family. I have produced reports for web tv dealing with different issues, the two lasts dealt with the discrimination in Brussels and the other entitled “Meat from the farm to our plates!” I do that because it passionates me. I’m also a member of an association named « Egalité » that militates against discrimination. Later, I would like to work in an institution for disabled or sick and afterwards create my own nursery line.
Thank you for having taken time to read my letter, I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
Marie :)
