| There isn’t much I don’t like to do or wouldn’t like to try. I like to try new things then most likely get bored and then want to try more new things. I have a lot of restless energy.
I enjoy taking night walks around the city to find cool “whole-in-the-wall” shops/cafes - board game nights - taking spontaneous trips to the coast where I search for cool rocks to put in my polisher- watching campy and animated movies – dancing in my car, on the dance floor and while grocery shopping (something has to make it fun) - singing badly in the car and in the shower – random outdoor excursions, wearing matching Thing 1 and 2 shirts and fabulous wigs with my best friend. Oh, and founding secret pirate societies.
I am a graduate from the Child & Family Studies (Human Development with Youth Concentration) at Portland State University. I am seeking stable, gainful employment that utilizes my education and allows me to follow my passion for working with children, youth and their families.
I have an extensive background working with children and youth (ages 3 – 18) through my education, previous employment and many volunteer activities. Through my degree program, I received education in human development, classroom education, cognitive learning styles, group facilitation and developmental psychology. For practicum, I acted as a classroom assistant at the Metropolitan Learning Center and as a residential/day camp counselor for several programs including Kiwanis, a special needs camp. I will continue to complete further Early Childhood Education classes to remain proficient in my education and skill-set.
Through my employment, as Youth Program Coordinator (AmeriCorps volunteer) with the Girl Scouts, I gained experience in group facilitation, program coordinating, event planning, community networking and partnership building, and the researching, developing and implementing of preventative curriculum for underprivileged and at-risk youth. I have been employed by children-oriented businesses such as a progressive children's café in Southwest Portland that served organic, vegetarian friendly meals and provided live entertainment such as puppet shows, tea parties and live children's artists. My responsibilities included supervision of young children in the play area and during performances/events. I have also worked seasonally at the Children's Place, a retail store for children's clothing and accessories, where I interfaced daily with parents and their young children. I am currently working as an Associate Teacher for a non-profit after school program. My responsibilities include supervision of students, discipline and conflict resolution, classroom management, substituting for lead teacher, tutoring and mentoring, planning and facilitation of lesson plans, games, outdoor/gym recreation and activities, and parent-teacher communication. I hold current certifications in Infant/Child/Adult CPR and First Aid, Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect, Portland Public School District Positive Support, and Oregon Food Handler’s. I am also enrolled in the Oregon Criminal Registry – Child Care Division.
For several years I have volunteered with the United Methodist Children and Youth Ministries, Girl Scouts and the American Red Cross Youth Corps. Through my volunteerism, I received training in facilitation and instruction, diversity, and activities, games and crafts. I volunteered as a group leader and dramatic cast member for Vacation Bible School, acted as a Girl Scout Troop Leader and Residential Camp Counselor/Trip Leader. As Disaster Youth Corps Chair-person for American Red Cross, I developed and implanted disaster education programs for elementary school-aged children. |
