Complaint   >> Posted: Mar 15 '09 by Maximilian in Valcea, Romania
First, I decided not to post any complaints and then I realized that this is just not fair for the next au-pairs who will decide themselves to apply for the job and don't have any idea about what what's going on into this family.

Now, I'll try to describe in few words my experience in Berlin with Ms. Mehnert's family. I planned everything by myself, I paid for my flight and everything.

We agreed on a 6 weeks cancellation period, I explained that I don't speak ANY GERMAN,I wanted to learn it after arriving in Berlin and also I talked about my last au-pair experience and I let her know that I had just ONE previous experience in Switzerland and the swiss family didn't had kids of that age 3/half. Even saying this, Ms. Mehnert believed that I'm still a possible candidate.

We talked about the duties and everything but she FORGOT to mention that you have to wake up every morning (which is not a problem) but getting the kids ready for kindergarten and putting them to bad every day is not such an easy thing thinking about their age and for an au-pair like me which has never had any experience with this is a really hard job, even for Ms. Mehnert was a REALLY REALLY hard job to do that.

Now, let's get back. From the MOMENT I arrived (Tuesday 05 March) Ms. Mehnert decided to pick me up from the airport which she didn't looked too happy doing that. Driving from the airport to her home she decided to go at a gas station and asked me to vacuum she's car, which I did.

After arriving home, she showed me the apartment and my room (no TV, no DVD, no PC, no bathroom). Well, of course that was not a really bad thing because not all the families can provide that.

In the next morning she decided to take me to the Registration Office and.. getting the working-permit visa ...and of course, I couldn't get it because Ms. Mehnert who had LOTS of previous au-pairs forgot to tell me that you NEED TO SPEAK BASIC GERMAN for getting the working permit.

She said that she will try to register me for some other job that you don't need to speak german for getting the working permit.

In my first weekend I decided to go out and see the City but Ms. Mehnert said "you can come with me and the kids (3yrs old twins) shopping and she will show you arround". Of course, I had to take care of one of the twin little girls on the street because she always walked fast, never waiting for us and the kidss crying... and me, a stranger who had the chance to see them only 5 minutes struggling to deal with the situation.

In our e-mails she asked me "**What kind of activities can you imagine doing with the twins?" I told her that It's a pleasure playing and teaching the kids things, and watching them...but that had nothing to do with getting the kids ready in the mornings and putting them to bed (the only activites that I had to do wit them) which is not a really easy thing for an unexpierienced au-pair like me.

After some horror days struggling to learn how to do that and changing the diapers and NO CHANCE FOR GETTING THE WORKING PERMIT with two hyperactive kids and of course the household duties everyday, she decided to tell me (thursday 12 March) that this job is not for me...and I TOTALLY AGREED with that.

She gaved me NO TIME for trying to find another family or getting home and in the next morning (Friday) the new au-pair was already arriving and I had to get out of the house. I explaind the situation that FEW HOURS is just NOT ENOUGH for leaving the house because I had no money for getting back home and no place to stay.

She started to threat me with the police and acting like I was a criminal and in the final, she camed back with a lie "i talked with the romanian embassy and you can get a plain ticket and pay for it after you get home". Of course, there is no such thing as this, she just wanted me to leave the house because the new au-pair was already arriving.

A friend of her drived me to the Romanian Embassy without no credit-card, no money, in the middle of Berlin...raining. She didn't even paid me for the week+ one weekend I worked and camed up with another excuse "the first week is just training" and of course she FORGOT TO MENTION THAT at the beggining and my horror days didn't looked like training...I spent all the day in the park with my 13kg baggage and NO MONEY,raining and... waiting for my mom to send me the plain ticket money...and my night sleeping in the airport waiting for the morning flight.

I TOTALLY AGRREE, I couldn't do the JOB with the kids and that was only her fault because we talked about my experience and she never said that the only thing beside beying a servant and the house-hold job is putting 3yrs old twin girls to bed and waiking them up in the mornings.

I don't have enough space to write everything. I never had the chance to talk with the previous au-pair because Ms. Mehnert told her that she will tell me everything by herself .

Dear au pairs. Please read our in-depth interview and posted profile to see the requirements of the job that Max could not fulfil and which were very clear from the start. Everything is listed from the duties to the pay to the hours that need be worked. Max was not able to get the German work permit due to his not knowing German. Our family has employed about 7 au pairs over the past 10 years and all got their permits even though some did not speak even basic German. The German authorities have obviously toughened their policies. When I told Max that he could not stay since it would be illegal for us to employ him and that I would have fired him even if he had a permit he admitted that he was overwhelmed by the job and did not think it would be so "hard". The new au pair is right on the mark: experienced with young children, knowledgeable about the household, friendly, outgoing and needed virtually no training on the job. It is a pity that Max was not screened for his abilities and did not own up to his faults, but instead had to lash out at a family to whom he applied for the job under false pretenses. I wish him all the best, and advise him to refrain from applying for another au pair position that he is incapable of fulfilling.
