| Shannon came to us on a Thursday and, by Monday, we all (she and us unanimously) agreed that she should probably leave. She was sweet and very mild-mannered, but she was so clearly unprepared for the degree of responsibility that was required to care for another family's children. She was too much a child, herself, in spite of her age. Two days after her arrival, on Saturday, early evening, our family and Shannon attended a town fair/carnival at our local park. Shannon's only task was to stay with and keep watch over our 6-yr-old son. It was a relatively small gathing of people, and there were a lot of people there who we knew. We were close by, and checking in on them from time to time. As it began to get dark, I noticed Shannon looking around bewildered. She had lost our son. It took about 20 minutes to find him, searching the most likely areas that he might go. And though our story, thankfully, has a happy ending, there are no words to describe the sense of panic that we felt, and also the helplessness. It was getting dark, the field was huge, there were people we knew but many we didn't know at all. We were in a location surrounded by woods, and beyond the woods were two very busy roads. Shannon was upset and seemed remorseful, and we tried to smooth things over and take the position that'; o.k., now she knew exactly how careful and diligent she really had to be. This wasn't a game or something to take lightly. She assured us that she understood the magnitude of the responsibility that was required to do this job. The next day, after going over the events of the previous night, we decided to have her stay with the kids, for a short while, so we could do some things we needed to do. She lost track of my youngest, here at the house, yet again, and proceeded to ask my oldest son where his brother was. After trying to get him to go find his brother, she PUT HER BOOK DOWN and said to my older son; "I guess I'd better go find him before your mom spazzes out on me again". This was Sunday, as in the day after the night that SHE LOST OUR CHILD!!!! All I can say is proceed with caution. She has no real previous nanny experience, and does not posess the qualities needed to do this job well. I don't believe she would intentionally hurt anyone, but she was terribly neglectfull of her resposibilities, and then extremely nonchalant about the whole thing. |
