My husband and I interviewed Michelle. She had awesome qualifications and was great with my 2 1/2 year old son and baby daughter. Two out of the four references (that I was able to reach) gave her great reviews (with the only comment saying she was late sometimes only due to commuting/traffic). After the second meeting (after meeting my husband) we aggreed verbally on a price and the next day verbally picked a start date. I still planned to do a background check anyway but felt very confident about her. On the day she was supposed to start she was a no show! I had to scoop up my daughter and take her to work with me. I called her twice to see if something had happened to her or if there had been some mis-communication but no return phone call. The next day I called again and left her a message to at least have her call me and tell me what happened but I have not heard from her. I just don't want this to happen to anybody else.

After interviewing with the family three times I informed the mother I was going to pursue other options very soon unless she was ready to make a decesion. She sent me to two different centers to conduct a criminal background check. Both centers informed me they could not do this unless the family was a childcare center. She then let me know I was supposed to be dishonest on the application therefore they would send the background check to the son's preschool. I gave her contact information for other agencies. In the mean time (within two weeks) I persued another position due to lack of employment. I understand children's safety is first priority. Given my references I felt I should have been hired with time allowance for background check. I am not opposed to this check. I too would conduct the check on any potential nanny. I would not have a great canidate become discouraged by having her visiting multiple agencies. These details should be worked out prior to interviewing a nanny. The mother told me her first canidate had taken a position due to same experience.
