Complaint   >> Posted: May 24 '08 by yvonne in Galway, Ireland
i saw selphine profile and added her to my hotlist and within a day she had emailed saying that she was very excited that we added her to our hotlist and that she thought that we would be a nice family to work with.. so after a big long mail from her telling me how much she loved children and her experience which was that she had worked in three countries as an au pair that she had a british passport and had just finished a job in england.. she also said that she was supposed to be coming to dublin to care for a boy with polio but that the boy had died and that it was such a tragedy... she wrote that she had travelled to africa to visit her parents who are missionaries there... so all of this seemed believable and i was starting to get excited... so i e mailed her back and said that i thought she was what we were looking for and if she was available to come to ireland... so she mailed me back and said that she could come straight away but that there was one problem "she didnt have enough money for the airfare" so when i saw this i thougt it was a bit odd. but i dismissed it and i continued with the email correspondence.. so she gave me a phone number to contact her which was 0023796363502, so i phone in order to speak to her and a man answered who said that he was her father and that she had gone to mass and he could get her to phone me back... and i said that would be fine... so then he asked would i mind if he could ask me a few questions as he obviously had concerns about what kind of a family his daughter was going to be travelling over to ,.. so i answered a few questions... and what struck me as strange was that selphine said that she was from south africa and that her parents were missionaries in africa, but this man didnt have a south african accent, but again i dismissed this as me just reading too much into it...so i got a mail later that evening from selphine saying that she was sorry that she missed my call and that she was glad that i had spoken to her father and that he seemed to be happy with the way that i spoke on the phone as he is usually very critical..... so i mailed her and asked her what kind of a price would we be talking about for a ticked and that i would have a look at prices from this end and she could see if she could find a price from africa... she told me that the money for the ticket could be taken out of her wages.. she also said that it would be better to find a cheap flight because it was coming out of her wages and she also wanted to be able to pay us back as fast as possible. so i agreed to look for a flight and so i started searching and while i was searching on the internet i came across an article describing a scam regarding getting money from families for flights and the au pair not ever turning up so i was very weary at this stage but i said i would stay looking for a cheap flight and see what happened because i didnt' thing this girl could be involved in this... so the cheapest i could come up with was €1100 which i definetely was not going to pay out.... but anyway i got a text asking if i had red her last mail, and i responded saying that i wasnt and could she ring me on my mobile... so the phone rang and it was her father again, and i definetely thought that this was not right... and he made some excuse that selphine was gone to the village or something... so he asked if i had any luck with flights and i told him the cheapest that i could find was €1100 and he said that he had a friend that was a travel agent and he could get a ticket for six or seven hundred euro.. so i said that i didnt know if we would be able to pay that much for a ticket so he said that he would speak to his wife and see if they could come up with half of the fare.. so i said that would be fine ... so i googled aupair scam and red a complaint about a girl called kinderella and the whole story was very similiar to my situation and just as i had finished reading the complaint the phone rang and the number was 00442081180048, and it was selphines so called father again and he said that he had spoken to his wife and they were able to come up with half of the cost of the flight , so i said that was fine but that there was one problem, that myself and my husband had a red an article on the au pair site regarding a scam in cameroon and before i could say any more the phone line went dead........ so i left it for a day to see if they would contact again and that was 23.05.2008 and i havent had any contact so needless to say that if she was a genuine au pair she wouldve

the numbers that rang my phone were the two in the complaint and 004321672625. so please dont' let yourself be fooled by the lovely pictures on her profile this person is not who she says she is.....
