Complaint >> Posted: Jul 21 '07 by J in British Columbia, Canada |
| 682268 Valentyna is unable to communicate at all in English and has extremely limited French language skills. We had a very poor experience employing her for one month as our daughter’s live-in caregiver. Valentyna contacted us in December 2006 after reading our family profile. After exchanging emails with her and attempting one phone call to the Ukraine, we agreed to employ her under the Live-In Caregiver Program in British Columbia, on the basis that she spoke fluent French and would provide childcare to our then 5 year old daughter. She arrived in Vancouver on May 25, 2007, and to our dismay, she was unable to communicate in anything but broken French. She informed us that in fact she does not speak French fluently but can only read and write in French. She also informed us that her emails were sent to us by her agent at Nannyland.ca, and not by her. While employed by us, Valentyna was initially unwilling to answer our door or telephone, and had limited ability to communicate with us by telephone. This was of great concern, as it appeared that she would not be able to contact help in case of an emergency, and or be contacted by our daughter's school in case of emergency. Valentyna could not communicate well with our daughter, and generally would not speak with her or attempt to engage her in conversation. Our daughter was extremely uncomfortable with this mute caregiving. Valentyna apparently entered into disputes with our daughter when she was left to care for her without supervision. On two occasions, we discovered that our daughter was left alone in tears in her bedroom after disagreements with Valentyna. Valentyna also informed our daughter shortly after her arrival in our home that she had to be nice to her or she would leave. Valentyna appeared to have no insight at all into her own behavior, its impact on our daughter or us, or how to enter into a relationship with a child. After 10 days, Valentyna informed us that our daughter was bad and that she could not care for her. She also informed us that she could easily find work elsewhere for a Russian family. We were unable to work out her relationship with our daughter, and gave her notice on June 28, 2007. She flew to Quebec on July 4, 2007. If you have any questions, please contact us via Family Profile 472547. |
