| I worked for the Fitzgibbon family a few years ago. It was one of the worst experiences of my life! I had been planning to move to Europe for a few years after college and got this job as a stepping stone to moving to Germany. Being an equestrian, it seemed the perfect job. They claimed to treat you well and as one of the family. They also claimed that you would have access to a car. Neither of which is true. There was one other girl there when I arrived to help in the duties. Well, to say the least, we were treated horribly. They worked you constantly and wanted to add to your duties all the time. They had agreed to pay for our toiletries, etc, which stopped happening. They yelled at us in front of guests. They claimed that we were so lucky to be there that we should be paying them! Their daughter is very two-faced and is not pleasant and is very spoiled. We were labelled au-pairs, but they do this to try and get around paying you what you are entitled to by law. You are really a groom. According to Irish law you are not allowed to work more than 35 hours per week and are to be paid no less than 350 E a week, and that was three years ago. They paid us 75 E a week. When we had finally had enough and were searching for a new job in the area, we were told by an agency to ask for our work permit number, which we would need to find a new job. When I asked Kathryn for this she told me she never got us our papers!! So we were illegal workers. She wasn't paying taxes on us and we could have been deported! We were told that we couldn't get a new job legally without our papers. While we were trying to find anything to get out of there, she got wind of it and fired me! She gave me two weeks to get out. The other girl promptly quit. Luckily some friends took us in. We had no choice but to return to the US. We didn't have enough money to go anywhere on our own, as we were very underpaid. I called the government and reported her. We learned through the community while we were there that she had done this many many times. She worked girls until they were terrified of her or so depressed that they quit. One I heard fled in the night! She got in trouble for having so many illegal workers. Obviously, I highly recommend you do not work for this family!!! It will bring you nothing but grief! She ruined a dream for me... |
