| Dear host family:
My name is Alba. I live in the countryside in Costa Rica. I have 5 brothers and sisters, I am the youngest one. One of my sisters is a teacher and other one lives in Panama. I have nine nieces and nephews.
My father is a farmer. My mother is a housewife and now she takes care of my grandmother. I like to spend time with my family. We try to visit my sister in Panama twice or three times a year. We miss her children a lot. I go to the university in San Jose; I am almost finishing my career in accounting. But I need to speak good English to get my degree. Now I am working for a transnational company. It produces cement products. This is one of the strongest companies in Costa Rica and the world. I have boyfriend. He is very nice and we get along well. We try to spend time together but sometimes it is difficult, because we both work and study; but not in the same places.
I don’t have much free time. I like to read, go to the movies and go out for a walk; it helps me when I feel stressed. I also like to go shopping. I have some good friends and I like to spend time with them; even we can’t get together very often. We get in touch trough internet or by phone.
I want to be a nanny because I need to improve my English; I also want to know another culture and I like children, so I think this is a good opportunity for me to do all that.
Some years ago I participated in an exchange program from school; I visited Oregon for one month; sometime later my sister from Oregon came to my house as part of the same program. I am sure we won’t forget that experience. Being part of another culture is very interesting; it really helps to grow up. I enjoyed very much the time I spent with the children I looked after.
I liked to play with them because it was a very different and interesting job; however it is necessary to be responsible to work with children. We laughed a lot and had lots of fun. They were used to pick up the toys we played with.
What I liked the most was going out with them. I took them to the park, or for a walk; that catches their attention. I was with them especially on weekends; every time their mothers needed to go anywhere they could not take their children with them. This job helped me a lot because I got extra money to help me pay the university. It gave me experience in childcare too.
I learned to be more patient and organized sharing time with them. Being part of a big family has been very useful for me. I have learned to tread very different people in our daily routines.
I am sure I can handle different situations and that this experience will be remarkable for the rest of my life. I am so happy because I have this opportunity and I know I will take advantage of it as much as possible.
We are going to have a great year together.
See you.
