| Hi, we hope you are the warm, loving, active, keen and friendly person (read the great and yet very human au pair ;-)) who would like to enjoy a year in our family. A few things about us and the Netherlands, if it arouses your enthousiasm and curiosity be sure to leave a message :-)! Our background is industrial engineering and management, Richard specialized in supply chain management, I specialized in (change) management. Richard is a gliding instructor and rows in a whaler, I'm thinking of picking up field hockey again on top of Pilates and wouldn't mind if you have running aspirations, we definitely have the scenery here!
We live in the historic center of a fortified city surrounded by beautiful nature close to Amsterdam (less than 15 min. by train to Amsterdam central station). We live in an 18 century monument with garden and excellent facilities for an au pair (small living room including kitchen, private bed room and bath room incl. washing facilities completely renovated a few years ago).
Within 30 meters you'll find a small square which is the vivid centre of our neighbourhood, used for lunches, dinners, drinks, playing ground including small swimming pool for the kids if weather permits. The biggest playground of the city is at the end of our street, distance less than 100 meters. Our neighbourhood offers a nice mixture of people who've lived here for ages and young families who've moved here from Amsterdam in search of more space for their kids to play. It includes several international flavours, within 100 meters US, UK, Belgium and Chile, friends of ours with currently a New Zealander au pair and a Canadian babysitter within 500 m. Our kids playfully learn English and would love to learn more. We're all more than willing to teach you (more) Dutch, anything from useful to fluent is available.
The Netherlands is a relatively small crowded country, which means you'll find almost anything within walking, cycling or driving distance. To give you a bit of an idea:
The Dutch scenery of black and white spotted cows, tulips and windmills still exists! Within 2 minutes of cycling you'll find pastures with cows, sheep etc., the national exhibition with millions of tulips is half an hours drive and our town alone has 3 windmills. Nature (lakes, forest etc.) within 15 minutes cycling, sea incl. beaches 30 minutes drive, the river Vecht and a canal (gracht) within 1 minute walk, our own boat that we use for easy yet healthy dinners with family, friends and neighbours is 3 minutes walking away. If you're lucky skating on natural ice in winter, the artificial type at less than 30 minutes drive. Lots of other sporting facilities nearby as well, for skiing we go further south i.e. to the Alps, being such a flat country you'll only find artificial substitutes in our country ;-).
Our neighbourhood is quite historic, with loads of centuries old architecture giving it a very nice atmosphere, you'll find attractive modern architecture and design as well in several cities nearby. Our town has a theatre, Amsterdam loads of it, including the Concertgebouw and Ajax soccer stadium for pop concerts. Loads of museums as well in the Amsterdam area, as far as painting is concerned a.o. Rembrandt, van Gogh and Cobra, Weesp has 2 museums both within 200 m. The train station is less than 10 minutes walking away and offers connections in 4 directions each 4 times an hour. Amsterdam central station is only 12 minutes by train.
We´ve seen and enjoyed quite a lot of the world, have friends in different countries. Hope we can assist you to enjoy the same. |
