| Dear Host Family
Hi! My name is Jessica ; I am a 21 year old female. I was born and raised in Durban, South Africa, it is here that I completed my High School Education, and went on to study Fashion Design full time at the Durban University of Technology.
As I had always longed to learn about different geographical histories and cultures, and I knew it would be wiser for me to go and travel some of the world where I would get a firsthand experience, learning and understanding different cultures, beliefs and people’s everyday way of living. Instead of just learning it from books, and someone else’s opinion. So after a year of studying, I accepted the fact that for me to obtain my degree at my full potential, I needed to leave to travel the world.
I left South Africa in March 2007, when I began working onboard a private 136ft motor yacht as a Stewardess. Aboard the yacht I learnt many invaluable lessons; contributing to the stronger, outgoing, confident person I am today. I also learnt how to be able to constantly adapt to different situations and scenarios (as yacht owners can be quite high profile and demanding at times).
It was also onboard the yacht that I travelled quite extensively, which included the East and West coast of USA, the Bahamas, many Caribbean Islands, Central America, North of South America and more recently British Columbia and Alaska. This is when I decided that I wanted to move and live in Canada.
This brings me to why we are being brought together :) Whilst I was in High School, I was always set on Aupairing once I had finished School. To attain this goal, I did over 200 Childcare Hours, in a children’s play center located near my high school, ranging from children aged three months to three years old. I did this over a period of time in part time hours in my grade 11 and 12 years in high school. It was during this time, that I learnt invaluable life skills, which included many of the basics such as changing diapers, feeding bottles and solids, and stimulating play for the babies and toddlers. Here I also learnt more advanced techniques, in how to deal with children and toddlers in various stages of life, how to enable them to reach their full potential at their tender age, and inspire growth on their part by always constantly encouraging and supporting them.
Due to all the effort I was putting in to attain my childcare hours, I decided to branch out a bit more and ensure I was well rounded in my childcare abilities. It was then that I started in a program called “S.M.I.L.E.” in which I helped teach less fortunate children how to read and speak English. This not only taught me how to be extremely patient, loving and nurturing, but a more valuable lesson…to always be grateful for what I am blessed with, and to show others around me how to feel the same way.
At the same time I did a first aid course, to enable me to take control with confidence any unwanted situations. On the yacht I worked on, it was also required that I take an STCW 95 course, which was broken down into three categories, namely First aid, Fire Fighting and PSSR. I feel that in any household it is not only a want but a necessity to have first aid knowledge.
Overall with my education and personal experience I feel I would be an asset to you and your family, and I truly desire to be a positive influence in your children’s present and future.
I look forward to speaking with you.
Have a great day!
Jess :) |
