| Dear Family, Hello! My name is Laura; I am twenty-five years old and currently live in Indianapolis Indiana in the United States. I am an energetic, fun loving person who loves to laugh and loves even more to make other people laugh. I love life and try to enjoy it to the fullest. I love to read, my favorite reading is historical fiction but I will read ANYTHING and probably get lost in it!! I love to color, paint and make things (even though it's not my strongest talent). I love being outdoors, and spend a lot of my free time hiking, taking my dogs to the park, camping, swimming, playing basketball, or just relaxing outside. I enjoy spending time with my family and loved ones having cookouts, playing board games or cards, or having coffee. I love to learn new things and I am constantly trying to seek out information. I am curious, thoughtful, sensitive, and strong. I grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina and Omaha, Nebraska and I have been in Indianapolis for about seven years. I worked for a family in Carmel for five years. Over the last few years their need for full time childcare has diminished. Their oldest is in high school now!!!! I feel so blessed to have been a part of their family's life for so long and still keep in close contact with them. I am hoping to find a family that is looking for a long term arrangement.
I believe that every child is unique and therefore I may interact differently with one child then I do another. I have found that most children need little more then redirection and reassurance instead of "punishment". Most times when a child misbehaves it is because they either do not have a clear understanding of what is and is not appropriate behavior or they have a need that is not being met (example: overstimulated, tired, hungry, not feeling well). Most importantly when working with children you must be gentle, patient, and consistent. There should always be time for exploration and curiosity, because in a child's world every moment is a teachable moment. What may just be a simple walk through the neighborhood can become an opportunity to learn about different kinds of insects or why the signs that tell traffic when to go are so important.
I believe that in order to truly thrive children need structure in their day to day routine but they also need diverse activities and interactions in order to stay engaged. I enjoy doing crafts, working on age appropriate academic activities, cooking and baking, playing outside, going swimming, outings to museums, the zoo, parks, science experiments, reading stories, singing songs, putting on plays, going to story time, play dates, and any other activities that the children I am working with enjoy. I am very active and love to be out playing when the weather permits. |
