Family's Message to Au Pairs and Nannies

Hello there, I finally have some extra time to write a bit more of a profile, so here is the more detailed version: Both my wife and I are firefighters. What that means for you is that each of us works a 24-hour shift twice a week. One of us is usually off, but there could be the rare occasion that our shifts overlap. One morning a week, one of us is on the way to work while the other is on the way home. We are in our early to mid-forties, physically fit, we eat healthy, and niether of us smokes or drinks. We try to be environmentally and socially aware. My wife speaks only English while I am also fluent in German. We like to travel as a family and you could choose to accompany us. We are homeschooling the children. Our daughter is 6 and our son is 3. We believe that the best way to learn is through life experience and following your childs interests. We do not plan on reproducing "school" at home. In the end, we want our kids to become adults that will make a positive impact on the world and are happy in whatever they choose to do and be. What this means for you is that the kids are always at home. We would love for you to be involved in their learning. There will be times when you will be taking the kids places so you should be a competent and safe driver. We are NOT looking for a houskeeper but you would be required to help with housework, cooking, laundry, etc. just as my wife and I do too. You should be comfortable with dogs as we have two fairly big and very friendly ones (German Wirehair Pointer and a Spinone). You should be self-motivated and a self-starter. We ar both fairly laizze-faire and would prefer someone who notices what needs to be done, and does it. You are part of the family and we hope this becomes a life-long friendship for both us and the kids. We want you to succeed and will do what we can to make you feel at home. You will have a private room and bath. We have an extra car available for your use as well as a cell phone. We are both actively involved with our kids and are not looking to warehouse them with you. This will be a team effort. We live on a rural, community minded island that is a 20 minute ferry ride from Seattle. We have been on Vashon for almost 14 years and can't imagine living anywhere else. We live in a comfortable home on a saltwater beach and look west at some of the most amazing sunsets. While almost everything is available on the Island (groceries, gas, movie theater, etc), Seattle is nearby and offers all the cultural, sports, and educational opportunities that a big city provides. This is in the Seattle area. While we find Seattle and the Northwest US to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. The combination of water and mountains is unmatched anywhere else I've found (except maybe New Zealand). We want you to be realistic in your expectations. IT RAINS HERE....OFTEN! The summers are wonderful and not too hot, and the winters are not overly cold, but we get a lot of drizzly and overcast days. In the summer we have very long days, while in the winter, they're fairly short. We are near Vancouver, B.C. and Portland, Oregon. If you like the outdoors, the Northwest is for you. I think we have a lot to offer and we hope to find the right person to include in to our family who will have a positive impact on who the children become. In the end, this is all about the kids.
